10 / 10.0 - Undertale
Sep 29, 2015

It's been years since I've started writing reviews for ZTGD but even after all this time, I've actually never given out a perfect score to any game. There have been some that have come close, but in the end, I could always think of some notable flaw or a way the game could've been more enjoyable. In the case of Undertale, I can't think of one particular flaw or a way it could've been made more enjoyable. As is, it is as perfect as anything could be in this imperfect world of ours.

It's an absolute joy to play and one that I believe will stand head and shoulders above the rest of the anime fighting game crowd for some time to come.

I think at the end of the day, the biggest question I have to answer for this review to be of any worth is a simple one. "Is this game only for FF fans or is it for rhythm game fans?" The answer to that is as follows. Both and either.

9.5 / 10.0 - Bravely Default
Jan 28, 2014

Bravely Default stands currently as my first big game of the year contender and while there are a few minor missteps along the way, it’s still a giant leap forward for what a traditional JRPG should be in the modern age.

Zero Time Dilemma is a triumph in storytelling and world building with some of the most complex and yet satisfying narrative ever to grace a videogame. 9.5 / 10.0 - Nioh
Feb 17, 2017

Nioh is a culmination of some of my favorite mechanics in video games. The incredibly fast paced, twitch based reflex combat of Ninja Gaiden. The meticulous strategy and sense of discovery of Souls and the loot/equipment upgrade system of Diablo. It's as though this was a game made specifically for me. If that wasn't enough, Nioh manages to become more than the sum of its parts as something truly exceptional with an identity of its own – one that I simply can't put down and it has secured a spot as the top contender in my game of the year list thus far.

I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of what Monster Hunter World has to offer. The sublime combat against a variety of awe inspiring monsters- the meaningful sense of progression where every little thing that I did felt like it mattered- it all culminated to the thrill of the hunt in those moments where with only a single life left, I fought against the odds, shoulder to shoulder with a group of strangers who became my brothers in-arms and when it was all said and done, I waved goodbye knowing that we had shared an unforgettable moment of triumph… until the next hunt.

[Crafting a worthy remaster] is a tall- or rather a colossal order (sorry, not sorry), and even from the first moment after booting up the game, I realized that [Bluepoint Games has] more than stepped up to the challenge

Valkyria Chronicles 4 weaves an emotionally charged tale about how war changes everything it touches and even through moments where winning felt just as bad as losing, I felt compelled to push forward to the end.

The joyous sense of freedom in being able to engage and disengage a situation as I effortlessly transitioned between stealth and combat- the feeling of excitement as the awe-inspiring bosses and set pieces set the bar to new heights both in spectacle and design, Sekiro is a masterpiece that will influence future games to come for generations.

As the follow up to the best selling game that Capcom has ever made and my personal pick for game of the year, it’s an understatement to say that there was a lot to live up to. Luckily, the masters at Capcom were more than up for the challenge and delivered on an expansion that highlights the unforgettable moments of triumph the series is synonymous for while moving forward with clever new mechanics that enhance the Monster Hunter experience to its finest iteration.

9.5 / 10.0 - Hades
Nov 10, 2020

Hades stands not only as the finest, most well-crafted game from the exceedingly talented developers at Supergiant but as one of the pinnacles of the genre. If you never looked at rogue-likes seriously before due to differences in personal tastes and what you believe that they represent, this might be the very title to change your mind.

Coming hot off the heels after Shadow of the Colossus and now with Demon’s Souls, Bluepoint Games have cemented their name as the best in the business when it comes to remaking beloved classics. Not only have they managed to capture and retain all the elements that made the original so great, they have brought it to the modern age as the absolute showcase title for a new generation of consoles.
