9.5 / 10.0 - DUSK
Dec 10, 2018

That really explains DUSK well. This is shooter perfection and something fans of the classics need to experience. Maybe it doesn't redefine what is possible with video games, but it beats out basically every other shooter I've ever played. I know I'll be replaying this for years to come and I look forward to seeing what fans are capable of with mod tools.

9 / 10.0 - Yakuza 0

It features all of the best aspects of the series with very little of the negatives, making for a game that I’ll probably still be digging through by the time Kiwami releases over here.

9 / 10.0 - CHUCHEL

CHUCHEL is a great experience that is definitely worth a whirl.

Super Mario Odyssey may not reinvent the Mario formula, but it is a supremely satisfying adventure with a plethora of content and a penchant for the zany. This is a must own for Switch owners and fans of platforming.

The old Civ mantra of “one more turn” is stronger than ever. The additions make for a much deeper strategy game and the inclusion of most of the features from previous entries makes for a remarkably well-rounded launch. It will be interesting to see where Civ VI goes, but I have a feeling there won’t be nearly as dramatic a change as Civ V saw.

As for me, I know I’ll be returning to this for a long time to come. I still occasionally boot up the original Flash game and I’ve put more hours into Rebirth between the PC version and the PS4 version than I’m proud to admit. The finale of the whole saga may not be so cut and dry, but Isaac has never had an easy life. The poor kid is still crying, six years after his introduction to the world.

8.5 / 10.0 - Strafe
May 9, 2017

STRAFE may not be a classic and it definitely has issues, but it's fun enough for anyone who wants a nostalgia trip. Hopefully others feel the same way, but I kind of expect most people will pass on it. That is their loss.

I would have to nitpick to come up with anything else. I suppose The Lion's Song isn't what you'd traditionally call a "game," but it works as an engrossing experience that you're bound to relate to in one way or another. Its relatively cheap cost also makes it an easy pick for the mid-summer drought of games, though it does more than just exist as a cheap distraction.

8.5 / 10.0 - FRAMED Collection

If you're a fan of noir thrillers, puzzle games or just creatively presented ideas, you're bound to find something you'll enjoy here. It also won't require a massive time investment, which is always a plus.

8.5 / 10.0 - Amid Evil
Jun 20, 2019

I'm not as over the moon as I was with DUSK, but that's like saying you didn't enjoy driving the Camaro as much as the Corvette. Obviously the sports car is nicer, sleeker, and prettier, but the muscle car is still a damn fine piece of machinery. Amid Evil is much the same. This is another wonderful FPS from New Blood that pays homage to and improves upon the past in all the ways you could hope for. Do you really need me to say anything else?

Nioh 2 doesn't dramatically alter what came before, but wisely updates the first game to create a stunning sequel and absolute must-play for fans.

8 / 10.0 - Alone With You

I'll gladly be replaying this to see the different conversation trees. It's really cool how no two people will have the exact same playthrough, yet the game will still cover the same themes and motifs. This should provide for a lot of conversation in the coming months.

8 / 10.0 - HoPiKo
Jan 6, 2017

Even if not every minute of HoPiKo is classic, I definitely think the game is worth playing. You can grab this new PC release or opt for one of the many other platforms it is available on, but don’t miss out. If nothing else, that soundtrack is worth the price of admission.

Simplicity is the biggest strength of Old Man's Journey. It doesn't require you to be a genius or a master gamer, but to have a penchant for something more oft-kilter. That it manages to be a satisfying experience all without saying a single word is remarkable and definitely worth a look.

Saying anything else will just ruin the magic that this short, intriguing title holds. With its low price point and great pacing, I'd encourage everyone to check this out. If you're a fan of sci-fi, this is almost a no-brainer, but even people who are typically not interested in visual novels would do well to try Subsurface Circular for themselves. The organic integration of puzzle elements makes for one of the best detective games around.

8 / 10.0 - Yakuza Kiwami
Aug 21, 2017

Really, you can't go wrong with Kiwami. I would have liked it if every aspect of the game had been fully redone, but we don't see remakes like this come along often. I can deal with a few stumbling blocks when the core quality of what makes Yakuza so unique and engaging remains untouched. At least now more people can have a chance to experience this classic, which is the best thing about Kiwami's existence.

8 / 10.0 - SiNKR
May 9, 2019

What it all comes down to is that it's hard to be down on a game like SiNKR 2. It so effortlessly executes its central premise that thinking up any negatives would mostly be nitpicking. Maybe you don't like minimalist puzzles games or just aren't big on mobile titles, but that doesn't make SiNKR 2 bad. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the price makes this a no-brainer purchase for even the most discerning individuals.

8 / 10.0 - Solo
May 6, 2018

Even if games so relaxed aren't your normal forte, I would recommend checking out Solo. Everyone has rough patches in their lives and it can be cathartic to explore our thoughts in a more interactive manner. Not every aspect of the game is perfect, but that beautifully mirrors how complex love can be.

8 / 10.0 - Project Warlock
Dec 4, 2018

Project Warlock is just a damned blast. You could say this is the best version of Wolfenstein 3D ever made. Hell, it even tops the original Doom in some categories. It certainly won't win awards for originality, but this is a true work of passion that pays off in the end.

Overall, Total War: Three Kingdoms can be summed up as yet another great entry in the long-running series. While it may not be the absolute pinnacle of what Creative Assembly can achieve, it has become my favorite entry simply because of the setting used. We've reached a point where your personal favorite Total War will be determined more by the property being adapted than any worry about quality or gameplay factors. Since everything is fine in Three Kingdoms, what else do I really need to say?
