Lucca Cardoso's Reviews

Passionate about games, music, film and writing about all of those things.
Dec 23, 2018

It's hard to find flaws in Return of the Obra Dinn. Everything's so polished and well-planned, completely new and familiar at the same time. There's nothing even similar to this game on the market, and, when it was over, I just wanted to keep investigating more strangers' destinies for hours on end.

Super Mario Odyssey is not just the pinnacle of the Super Mario franchise, but the pinnacle of 3D platformers in general. Great in its gameplay, design, and soundtrack, it's essential to any player.

10 / 10.0 - Into The Breach
Aug 27, 2018

Much more than a turn-based strategy game, than a sci-fi game or than just any other indie game, Into the Breach is a masterpiece. Challenging without being unfair, complex without being overwhelming and familiar without being cliché, it's perfectly balanced to provide a unique experience.

9.5 / 10.0 - Gorogoa
Oct 28, 2018

It's impossible to describe Gorogoa in words. All the sentimentality and complete harmony in all of its elements, together with an innovative gameplay, make this a unique game that will hardly be replicated.

9.5 / 10.0 - Stardew Valley
Dec 10, 2017

Stardew Valley is an extremely relaxing and fun game. The variety of activities to perform keeps the player glued to the screen and turns this into one of the most addictive games of the last years. It deserves to be played by anyone with access to it.

Loaded with philosophy, The Red Strings Club is able to capture the player in a narrative that is deeply controversial and full of dualities with simple but satisfactory gameplay, reaching its pinnacle with one of the best endings ever in a game.

9.5 / 10.0 - Dead Cells
Oct 16, 2018

Dead Cells mixes elements from two different genres that are starting to oversaturate to create its own genre: the roguevania, offering refreshing originality. All of its very well-executed aspects create an experience like no other.

9.5 / 10.0 - The Outer Worlds
Feb 13, 2020

The Outer Worlds is one of the most ambitious indie projects ever, but somehow it feels very humane. Be it for its lovely characters, its surprisingly consistent universe or its tiny time-saving options, it's possible to see, at all times, the humanity behind this game. Because of that, it's an experience I recommend with all my heart.

9 / 10.0 - Iconoclasts
Sep 12, 2018

Iconoclasts is a game that, having its story as the main focus, deals with subjects such as faith, oppression, exploration of other peoples and prejudice. Beyond that, it succeeds in the technical aspects, despite some weird design choices. Joakim Sandberg is to be congratulated for, alone, being able to create one of the best games of the year.

Childhood is maybe the most important stage of our lives. Still, it's the stage we face with the most tranquility. The simplicity with which The Gardens Between talks about friendships and childhood touched me, making me remember and reflect. Playing this game is like reliving these memories, even if for a short period of time. Despite being far from a perfect game, it's an experience I think everyone should have.

9 / 10.0 - GRIS
Dec 29, 2018

From the first cutscene, GRIS shows what it is here for. Fully committing to its minimalism, it knows how to balance sentimentality and reflexion, noise and silence, to create an experience like no other. This game is truly a work of art.

9 / 10.0 - Slay The Spire
Jul 20, 2019

Slay the Spire is one of the most fun and refined games released this year, be it in its game mechanics, its strategy elements, its choice possibilities or its soundtrack. That's why its lacklustre art direction surprises me so much.

Untitled Goose Game is neither deep nor thought-provoking. But it's so, so, so fun, and that's enough for what it wants to be. House House proves, once again, that they can transform any unusual idea into a one-of-a-kind experience, funny from beginning to end.

Lonely Mountains: Downhill is, most likely, the best BMX game released in the last few years. The attention to details is commendable and, despite some flaws, the gorgeous atmosphere and fun gameplay stand out.

9 / 10.0 - Embracelet
Dec 11, 2020

Embracelet is a virtual hug from Machineboy to anyone willing to play it. Somehow, it tells a lovely classic coming-of-age tale with a twist that makes the player feel everything and more, still without tripping on itself.

9 / 10.0 - Sunlight
Jan 21, 2021

I don't even feel comfortable talking about Sunlight. It's such an intimate and personal experience that the ideal scenario is to live it at your own pace — to get immersed in this transcendental story with no idea of how it's going to turn out and psychologically prepared to revisit your own past in a journey with a bittersweet destination.

8.5 / 10.0 - Donut County

Donut County is a very pleasant and fun experience, that was undoubtedly a labour of love from its creator. Some flaws, though, prevent it from being an excellent game.

8.5 / 10.0 - Cuphead
Oct 8, 2017

Cuphead has an impressive art style and is challenging in the right way, offering satisfactory rewards after each stage. In spite of some unfortunate issues, it's still very much recommended, especially considering its current price.

8.5 / 10.0 - Nuts
Jan 28, 2021

Developed by a team working remotely, NUTS is a unique and surprisingly effective experience for what seems to be, at first, a mere squirrel-photographing simulator. The attention and care put into each and every aspect of the game are tangible, but there's no denying that more gameplay variety and some small adjustments would be ideal for this game to become a masterpiece.
