Critic Reviews for Tell Me Why: Chapter 1

Tell Me Why: Chapter One is certainly a promising start for Dontnod's new tale, as the developer looks for a slightly stunted but more mature take on difficult subject matters. Tyler Ronan is a surprisingly positive depiction of a transgender character, even if the bar is set incredibly low, and it's a relief that for once a Dontnod protagonist isn't put through drawn out, traumatic events as a rite of passage. I'm cautiously optimistic to see if Tell Me Why can build on this solid start.

Compared to the past works of Dontnod, Tell Me Why begins in a more lukewarm way, but in any case it hides, in the folds of its script, some very intriguing ideas that are just waiting to be gutted properly.

There’s no point in finding answers to the question in the title; think of it just as a new beginning of a captivating story. I enjoyed meeting Tyler and Alyson - you don’t meet such vivid characters everyday, but was disappointed by the central intrigue of the game. However, the game merits the attention for setting a new trademark for transgender representation in the video games industry and hopefully it will gain momentum in the future.

DontNot Entertainment presents a brotherhood story that, although entertaining, is rather simple. Tell My Why tackles Alyson and Taylor Ranon's journey in search of answers of their childhood filled with tears and tragedy. A recommended game to pass the time without complications on a boring afternoon but after finishing it, it will be forgotten.

Dontnod Entertainment is back with another very promising narrative work and, again, committed to the social plane and inclusiveness, returning to deal with issues that, of course, deserve to be represented.

Overall, the way the game broaches on mature themes and difficult choices feels natural and true-to-life. This is only made possible by the characters themselves who are realistic, deep, and imperfect, especially Tyler.

The attention to detail so far truly is astounding, and with the debut chapter clocking in at around less than four hours, I can’t wait until the next one.
