Critic Reviews for Heroes of Might & Magic III - HD Edition

A great game, unimpressively updated. Get the bigger, cheaper version instead.

Heroes of Might & Magic III is still an all-time classic, although there are better and cheaper ways to revisit the past than this HD remake.

It is hard to recommend Heroes of Might & Magic 3 HD Edition. If you played this game, and you liked it, 15 years ago when it first came out, you might get a bit of nostalgia from this version. But without the expansions bundled in and practically no changes, there exist better alternatives on the market for you to spend your money on.

With less game than other versions available online, there's seemingly little incentive to invest in this HD version

I'm pretty happy with this version of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, but it is a bit harder to recommend when the Complete edition is on GOG with even more missions and a map generator.I can cheerfully recommend it to people who may never have encountered the game before. But if you're a Heroes of Might and Magic fan, who never needed high-definition anything to enjoy these games, then the chances are that GOG already had you covered, and there's not much for you here.

With the release of HoMM3HD following hot on the heels of Avernum 2: Crystal Souls, it feels like revamped versions of old-school fantasy games are the flavour of the month – and we're not complaining. As with Avernum, HoMM3's sheen has not been dulled by the vitiating properties of time; instead, its unique blend of roleplaying and strategy is just as alluring 15 years on.

Targeted to those looking to dig up nostalgia from the past, fans will be 100% satisfied with this HD recreation. Those looking to get into this franchise may want to start with a game made in this decade.

This is the same game you should have played before. If you already own it complete with random map generator and expansions and have minimal interest in the online, then this remake might not have enough going for it to convince you to buy it. However, if by some chance you missed this game before and enjoyed other tactics game, or you're just looking to take on real people to see how good your strategy really is, then it's easy to recommend nabbing the update.
