Critic Reviews for Orcs Must Die: Unchained

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is one of the most polished and fully-featured free-to-play games available on the PlayStation Store, but the console controls aren't ideal.

Free-to-play games often carry the stigma of being “pay-to-win” — a design philosophy that says if you want to win, buy in. Orcs Must Die! Unchained isn't that. It's a hoopla of co-op action that works whether or not you want to drop some dough. While the new Sabotage mode is a welcome, albeit lesser refined addition to the series, it's in Battlegrounds that Robot Entertainment flexes its action gameplay muscles and it's the game type that will keep me coming back for dozens more hours — or at the very least, to nab those daily login bonuses.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is a shining example of how to balance a free-to-play game to be engaging without paying, yet rewarding if you do decide to drop some money into it. The wave-based gameplay is a lot of fun, particularly when playing with other people, and the unique versus mode creates a whirlwind of cooperation and competition. Robot Entertainment could have done a little more to tailor the PS4 release specifically to the console, as well as better functions for quick communication during online matches, but these are small gripes on an otherwise great experience.

As free-to-play games come, Orcs Must Die! Unchained is quite good. The game is crafted meticulously to serve you humor and playfulness, as well as complicated strategy-led gameplay that will have you hooked after an hour or so. While the term microtransactions will be the dirty word with this game, they're not necessary to have some real fun.

Orcs Must Die: Unchained might just be my surprise game of the year to this date. The amount of fun that I've had with this game is insane. The game is polished and balanced. The year open beta definitely benefited the game a ton. I will recommend just about any gamer try this game, especially with the price of free. However once you begin your journey of killing orcs, you might not want to stop!

Orcs Must Die Unchained truly carries the series into the right direction. With new modes, characters, traps and more, Unchained is refreshing enough as a free to play to keep me coming back.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained cleverly mixes action and strategy gaming to create a fun and light-hearted horde defense game. Its F2P implementation is subtle and works well, and the game is a great way to whittle away a few hours where you feel like killing something.
