Gears of War is fun as ever, but the technical flaws and limitations of Ultimate Edition are disappointing.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition still plays well from a design perspective, but numerous technical issues hold the PC version back.

It’s not that Gears of War Ultimate Edition for Windows 10 is a bad game; it’s just that everything good about it is what’s good about Gears of War for any other platform. It adds nothing that can tangibly enhance the experience, and with a litany of technical issues and ignorance of its own virtues, Windows 10 gaming has not put its best foot forward here.

I never enjoyed Gears of War the first time around, and although this iteration looks and plays beautifully, it hasn't made a convert out of me. For the Gears of War fans out there, this is probably a great pick-up and should get you drooling over Gears 4.

The core campaign and multiplayer segments are all here, and if players don’t own an Xbox One it’s definitely worth checking out, especially if having never played a Gears of War game. This is the start of it all, and better than it originally released in most aspects.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is just that, the best way to play Gears of War. Although there were a few hiccups and muddy textures, the overall experience brings back a good amount of feel-goods and memories. Some may forget that Gears isn’t just a muscle-bound third-person shooter, instead finding influences in horror, suspense, and thriller and mixing themes to great effect. Alongside obvious visual improvements and additional chapters from the original PC release, the Ultimate Edition the game gets performance and menu additions that will be welcomed by the PC crowd like benchmarking, and Windows 10 Game DVR functionality. Ultimately, if this is your first Gears of War experience, or you just want to remember what a great beginning to end game feels like, this is the way to play Gears of War.
