Critic Reviews for Old School Musical

But story aside, Old School Musical as a full package is an unexpected treat. The post-story challenges, along with the replayable Arcade Mode puts together the best of what this game can offer. It's a solid foundation to hopefully build something more solid in the future.

With a combination of amazing chiptunes and retro goodness Old School Musical should be the game to convert you if you've never considered Rhythm Action before.

While bogged down by its postgame content and scant multiplayer offerings, Old School Musical is still a great time for those who want a nostalgic and comedic trip back to the 80s and 90s. Old School Musical's dazzling soundtrack and wonderful visuals should be experienced by those who want to boogie on down to the arcades.

Old School Musical is a fun and engaging rhythm game that offers a great throwback to a host of retro titles.

Old School Musical is an interesting rhythm game that is both involving and simple to play. Being filled with retrogaming references all over, it's somewhat strange that the game is not licensed to include the actual soundtracks of the classic games it alludes to but the experience is overall fun and rewarding, with enough additional content to push the lifespan beyond its initial limits.

There was a lot of potential afforded by the world jumping mechanic as well as its emulation of recognizable classics, but Old School Musical doesn't do much with them. While the story, and especially the Chicken Republic post-game mode, can offer some challenging rhythm tapping, Rob and Tib's tale stumbles to offer more than a textbook case of saving the world.

Old School Musical is much more than a funny hommage to the 8 and 16 bit era. With a strong content of almost 50 tracks and a well-written story mode, La Moutarde's rhythm game delivers a strong content, but you will have to quickly switch to hard mode to face a real challenge. Too bad its classic mecanics avoid taking risks, otherwise it would have been an instant classic on its own.

Don't expect a deep experience here, folks. What you will find is a rather expansive list of artists and songs paying homage to one of the best eras in gaming. I just could have used a little more refinement in its mechanics and the mixture of the additional levels outside the story to do something a little more spectacular during my main playthrough.
