Critic Reviews for Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk

In addition to the main mystery, Jake Hunter: Ghost of the Dusk includes four other mini-mysteries that were originally cell-phone games in Japan and a genuinely amusing case file featuring chibi versions of Jake and Yulia. It's a well-rounded package, but I don't think anything here is compelling enough to make this a must buy for people still holding onto their 3DS.

Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk can certainly appeal to those looking for a visual novel and for a murder mystery type of game, its art style and content go very much in that sense. However, expectations fall short due to the lack of challenge of the investigations and the game does not transmit the players a real feeling of progression and advance in the game's plot.

I think Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk accomplishes what it sets out to do. It's more interactive visual novel than it is a typical vidoegame, but if you're in the mood for a casual yet compelling experience that's well written with a strong cast and solid presentation, you can't go wrong here.

Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk is a solid entry in the series on the Nintendo 3DS, bringing an interesting story and fun gameplay mechanics that will keep you busy for many hours. The extra cases that are also part of this portable release are a nice bonus and a great way to extend your stay.

Ultimately, I found "solving" Ghost of the Dusk's mysteries to be a tad rote by the end. Still, despite some slight repetition, the mechanics here are soundly implemented and I rather liked my time in Jake Hunter's world.

It's definitely a fun an entertaining game that fans of visual novels and adventure games should check out on Nintendo 3DS. It's fun that we still get 3DS releases so late in 2018, right? Be sure to buy and enjoy this game since that would increase the odds of us getting the latest new game in the series that is out in Japan for Nintendo Switch, as well as the one that is releasing over there in December!

Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk will last you about 10-12 hours. This 3DS package justifies the $39.99 price tag by including a few bonus cases which are ports of mobile entries in the series. There are also hidden passwords to find throughout the main game that can be entered. These unlock all sorts of bonuses including sound tests, character profiles, interviews with the developers and a CG gallery. Overall Ghost of the Dusk is a decent visual novel that’s held back by a localization that tried a bit too hard to appeal to an audience that likely wasn’t interested in this kind of title to begin with. Aksys Games should know better and quite frankly this is concerning. I fear they may have written themselves into a corner and have to now stick with it in order to be consistent with future games. Case in point, a new title in the series was recently released for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. However the game was rated in Korea as Jake Hunter Detective Story: Prism of Eyes, suggesting that they are intending on localizing this one and keeping the Jake Hunter name. Should that actually be the case, we might be stuck with all the pointless localization changes made in the releases by Aksys Games and that’s a shame. As for Ghost of the Dusk, I can recommend it to those of you who really enjoy the genre and are looking for one to play on the 3DS. It may not be the best the system has to offer, but you might enjoy it for what it is.
