I’m not much for tactics games, I dabbled in Warcraft 3 over a decade ago, but since then I never found myself engaged with games like Civilization or any of the Total War franchise. I let you know this so if you too are coming to Total War: Three Kingdoms without an iota of experience you can determine if this is a game for you. There is a lot to take in with the game, but will the tyranny of Dong Zhou bring you to your knees, or will you rise up to become Emperor of China? Read on in this (not-so) Rapid Review to find out.

The new installment of the star saga of Creative Assembly amply meets expectations. A campaign with a great focus on the different characters and the relationships between them that offers many possibilities to the player along with the characteristic battle system of Total War define an indispensable game for lovers of strategy. Perhaps a little more variety is missing in the types of units, but it does not have to tarnish the great work of the developer belonging to SEGA.

New and improved mechanics, complemented by the freshness of its setting, have made Total War Three Kingdoms one of the best titles in this franchise yet. Character traits and relations give a newfound personality to the game while the new class system and Army composition make for a much deeper gameplay. The addition of a fresh, intricate diplomacy system with a comprehensive user interface gives you the tools to pull off complex diplomatic maneuvers, and outsmart your enemies. The endgames are no longer a boring and one sided grind, but stay challenging throughout the playthrough. Even though this game does suffer from technical issues such as buggy AI behavior at times, it is, without a doubt, one of the best Total War games to date

Three Kingdoms represents a return to form for the historical side of the Total War series, with an emphasis on much improved diplomacy and inner-faction politics, alongside a fantastic setting working in the favour of this massive strategy sequel - even if the real time battles mostly feel very familiar.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is one of the most comprehensive historical strategy games of all time. It challenges its players by testing their skills in war and military strategy, diplomacy, building creation and planning and managing cities and towns. As its story is connected with history, it's very realistic and appealing and has the potential to make you feel like a real historical strategist.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is not an ideal part of the popular series, but still remains a very addictive project with tons of gameplay. The idea of transferring the setting to Ancient China turned out to be a real trump card in the sleeve of talented developers, and the annoying flaws are likely to be corrected by the next updates.

For those new or interested in the series, this is absolutely the best place to start, as it’ll ease you in and communicate its complexities better than any other Total War. And if you’re experienced, you’ll just love how this is a smoother, smarter ride. Three Kingdoms isn’t a perfect Total War game, but it’s the closest the series has come in a long time.

If you are a fan of Guanzhong's fantastic tale, there is an undeniable charm to Total War: Three Kingdoms that had me smiling from ear to ear on many occasions. First-time encounters with familiar characters, seeing how the developers envisioned a particular location or watching a scene play out differently in the game from the way it went in the book were all fascinating, enjoyable experiences for me that might not resonate the same way with someone who is unfamiliar with the source material.
