An Overwatch animated series and Diablo anime may be in the works.

The two projects may be development if the LinkedIn account of Nick van Dyck, president of the film and TV division of Activision Blizzard, is an indication. The profile (via IGN), states that Dyck is the "executive producer of Diablo, a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment's IP, rendered in anime style." The show is currently in pre-production for release through Netflix according to the profile. The profile then goes on to mention an animated Overwatch series, stating that Dyck and his creative partner have "developed and sold and animated series based on Blizzard's Overwatch franchise." Blizzard has not confirmed the existence of these two series at this time.

A Diablo animated series for Netflix has been rumored to be in development before. Overwatch, on the other hand, has already received the animation treatment since the game released. A series of short films expanding on the franchise's lore have been released since the game released a few years ago.

It is not surprising that animated projects for both Diablo and Overwatch could be in the works. Both franchises will be receiving new entries sometime in the future. Both Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 were announced at Blizzcon 2019. The games were announced for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, though it is likely that the games will also come to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Blizzard may release the animated adaptations of the games along with the upcoming sequels.

Video game adaptations have been riding a wave of success. The third season of the Castlevania animated series is set to release on Netflix early next month. A series based off of the Witcher franchise also saw huge success, boosting game sales since its release. The recently released Sonic the Hedgehog film saw a big opening over the past weekend. The movie now holds the record for best opening weekend for a movie adapted from a video game, beating out last year's Detective Pikachu.
