6.9 / 10.0 - Grow Up!
Sep 11, 2016

Grow Up retains the charm and whimsy of the first game without being a simple re-tread. There's a bigger world to explore and you'll be reaching for the stars in no time. Just be sure to hit those checkpoints on the way up, lest you fall down and curse your luck... It's a cheap and cheerful game that I recommend, especially if you found yourself laughing at B.U.D's gammy legs in the original.

"The game follows the Norse mythology, which we often see only vague allusions to in gaming. The dialogue is all subtitled Scandinavian, keeping true to the Nordic tone. This, the subtle lilting music and the animation all blend together well to make Jotun feel like a playable fairy tale, albeit a rather grim one"

6.5 / 10.0 - NHL 17
Sep 12, 2016

NHL 17 is more like the previous entry in that fun will mostly take a backseat to simulation/realism and the problems that entails. There is fun to be had when the cons keep to themselves but it happens a bit too much. However, all the customization and game modes will keep you busy for a very long time. Especially if you need to take breaks because you grow a little frustrated. In the same vein as those who enjoy racing simulators, sports fans will enjoy the latest entry into EA Sports' series but it will be another year that greatness wasn't achieved once again.

8 / 10.0 - Filthy Lucre
Sep 16, 2016

"I called this game a 'rough diamond' and that's exactly what I mean. It's a great concept that could benefit from a bit more polish. As a solo game, it's not bad. As a co-op game, it's much better. Taken as a debut game, with its reasonably original concept and fusion of old and new stealth and action elements - it's a great achievement, and one that makes me hopeful for both the game and its studio's future."

PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness is a visual novel based on the anime series. I liked seeing the characters, learning more about the world, and I liked the ability to make choices that impact the story to fit how I thought the character might respond - even if it resulted in death and the end of the game. The few times the game let you see the stitching on the story was a little annoying, but it never dampened the entire experience. If you hate anime or visual novels, this game will not change your mind, but it is a well-crafted one. Fans of the show or genre should not miss it.

7 / 10.0 - Unholy Heights
Sep 18, 2016

"Unholy Heights is a great real estate, simulation title. I originally enjoyed controlling prices, amenities, deciding who got a room, meeting all the various creatures, and in turn controlling satisfaction. It's just that this might get old because of the many difficulty spikes in order to extend the game's completion time. As tower defense experiences go, Unholy Heights is enjoyable but just kept from being a must buy due to difficulty mismanagement. Seeing as how this was released on the 3DS, I could easily recommend this for short/medium drives with the Vita's remote play feature."

Claire: Extended Cut is a good addition to a survival horror fan’s personal library, especially if you like the psychological aspect of games like Silent Hill. The 2.5D graphics do a great job of presenting the story and the sound kept the game tense. I did find the bugs, the occasional aimless wandering, and somewhat obscure puzzles to be a problem in some parts of the game. If you can overlook these issues, Claire: Extended Cut is a scary and fun experience that becomes better and more sinister as you continue to play.

Episode 2 is the great tasting, less filling sequel to episode 1. It throws more action at you and digs a little deeper into the characters that episode 1 was only able to introduce. I am still digging the Bruce Wayne part of the story, and Selina Kyle’s character is very engaging. There are some minor technical issues, but they do not prevent you from enjoying the total experience. If you like Batman or enjoy the way Telltale Games creates a world, I have no reservations recommending this game.

"Overall, PES 17 is an enjoyable game; a representation of football the way we sometimes wish it to be, and a good time with a friend (or stranger). It’s not a revelation for the series though, nor is it a huge advance on its predecessor. The niggles mentioned above stop this game being ‘great’ in my opinion, but many of these are subjective points and your experience with the game could easily differ dependent on how much or little you agree. At the very least, the game proves it can go shoulder to shoulder with its closest rival; offering a satisfyingly different gameplay experience."

"Imagine if the show Metalocalypse and the movie Heavy Metal had a baby. Now throw in even more bloody, visceral, H.P. Lovecraft-esque exploits that would make any hardened warrior blush. Seriously, if there was an alternate dimension that was a literal hell landscape, Slain: Back From Hell would be a perfect depiction of it. The art, music, level design, and creatures all come together to form an unforgettable, gothic horror experience. Although with all the headbanging I did to the soundtrack, I might not remember much in the long run. After all metal never dies."

6 / 10.0 - Lichtspeer
Sep 29, 2016

"Lichtspeer had all the components for a great arcade “reverse angry birds” game. You predominately throw spears, while stationary, at hilariously designed Germanic creatures and try to eviscerate their faces with their own blood. Alright, I may have gone a bit too far but that is essentially the point of this game. Sadly, certain design choices and technical slip-ups kept Lichtspeer from being a title that wants you to play it for over one hundred hours. Yes, there is a trophy that requires you to play the title for that long."

8.9 / 10.0 - Attack on Titan
Oct 1, 2016

"If you don't get hooked on the gameplay, you may find the game repetitious in the latter stages, but by then you'll have gotten your money's worth regardless. Ask yourself one question before passing this game up; will I ever have another chance to bloodily slice limbs off of grotesque naked men (without doing serious jail time)?"

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity mixes up different styles into a delicious pie. You can still see the different elements, but they complement each other in the overall game. It is fun and addictive with a clean and cute, modern retro style. Although there are some annoyances such as the camera, it was never enough to make me want to stop playing. The individual game elements are never as deep as they would be on their own, but the game has a great rhythm and feel. It was a very pleasant surprise for me, and I now look forward to future Touhou games.

9.2 / 10.0 - Aragami
Oct 4, 2016

"Aragami was a great experience. It breathed life into its world, offered many ways to travel and battle, and will provide you with much replability. With only my recognition of a certain plot point and a handful of minor issues serving as cons, I can't praise this game enough. For stealth enthusiasts this is a must buy and I highly recommend it even for those who would normally like to shoot their way past everything. Lince Works has easily made it to my list of developers to watch out for and I can't wait to see what they'll do next."

6.3 / 10.0 - A Bastard's Tale
Oct 6, 2016

"A Bastard's Tale is definitely for the old school and self-hating gamer. Its core design is good and can provide a nice, "screw you" challenge that some of us love. I just wish that it wasn't so hard to tell which way to defend sometimes. The complete experience isn't terribly long but for the price and what's included is fair. It's just up to you if you want to hit a roadblock on most levels and hope you get lucky one of the many, many, many times you retry a level."

8 / 10.0 - Mafia 3
Oct 6, 2016

Mafia 3 is all about Lincoln Clay's rise from the bottom. It's a good old fashioned single player experience that wants you to be suckered in. And you know what? The writers, developers, and actors all deserve your undivided attention whenever a character opens their mouth. Invest in Mafia 3's narrative and you'll be rewarded with a payoff that'll have you begging for more. Gameplay is strong, even if it is a little bit on the samey side of things after a while, but with such a large map to explore and side missions and meaningful collectibles to, er, collect, there's no chance you're getting out of New Bordeaux in under 20 hour

8.5 / 10.0 - FIFA 17
Oct 9, 2016

The big standout this year is The Journey. It's a really nice addition to the series and one that I hope EA carries forward to the next game. Maybe a historical story? The rise and fall of one of the greats? Who knows... Bottom line is that it's FIFA and if you're a fan of FIFA, you're going to be fan of this. Simple.

6.9 / 10.0 - 100ft Robot Golf
Oct 10, 2016

"In the end the gameplay isn't great. It's up to you and your compensation to pull through on that regard. However, every other aspect of 100ft Robot Golf is excellent. Largely thanks to the campy, cheesy story and hilarious dialogue. Which I found more than enticing to deal with the title's gameplay shortcomings. It's just a shame that once the plot ends, you basically have a broken golf game. I'm sure patches and fixes will improve everything considerably but at the moment all we have here is an arcade-like golf game failing to reach the plateaus it strived for."

5.5 / 10.0 - Lastfight
Oct 10, 2016

LASTFIGHT isn't going to be taking the place of any other mainstream fighters on the market today, but it's a nice little deviation from the beaten path. Due to the game's repetitiveness, perhaps this one is best played in small doses, or even better, with a few mates and some beers.

8.5 / 10.0 - Mantis Burn Racing
Oct 11, 2016

Mantis Burn Racing sets out to be a fun top-down circuit racer that you can pick up and play with ease. In this respect it has succeeded massively. It's a fun little game that'll keep you going for hours on end with the extensive career mode, though I imagine this game will get its legs from its multiplayer suite. It's a simple, fun, and unpretentious racer that harks back to the good old days when a racing game was just a racing game. Get a mate or two (local or online) and you're bound to have some silly fun.
