6 / 10 - Edge
Dec 9, 2013

Creative levels, an involving soundtrack and a long-lasting experience make Edge a title not to miss. Any flaws Edge might have are quickly overlooked for its sheer quality.

The Assassin's Creed series is teetering on the brink of saturation. Credit to Black Flag for escaping that fate thanks to its interesting and innovative mechanics. Naval exploration brings in several additional hours of gameplay, which along with its competent plot contribute to make Black Flag the best Assassin's Creed game since the second chapter of the series.

It's undeniable that Wii Sports Club is a clear improvement over the original, with its improved graphics, precise controls and online multiplayer mode. In spite of this, Nintendo could have taken a bigger risk, by developing a true sequel to Wii Sports. As it is, one has to wonder if its price isn't a bit excessive for what it offers.

Knytt Underground is an odd game, and certainly a polarizing one, as some will greatly enjoy its ambiance and exploration-heavy gameplay, while others won't be able to overlook its terrible story and dialogue sections.

The LEGO series sticks to its formula of accessible puzzles, gags and simple gameplay mechanics. While this coherence is overall positive, it's not improving where it should. Nonetheless, the overwhelming presence of the Marvel universe and the amount of unlockable content are well enough for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes to please the fans of both the comic and the game series alike.

7 / 10 - CastleStorm
Jan 28, 2014

Castlestorm displays certain qualities which are more than welcome and that shake the ground a bit in what is overwhelmingly a niche style. Nevertheless, its record would be far more interesting if its technical flaws and repetitiveness were solved.

It's hard to understand why such a flawed piece of work would be released without at least a major revision. Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! tries and fails not only at being a decent playable effort, but even at portraying a popular animation series for its fans. If anything, it provides an example of what not to do in a game.

Once again, the Donkey Kong Country series returns to the spotlight. Tropical Freeze is a worthy successor and Retro Studios has done a fine work in bringing the series to Nintendo's current generation. Loading times and underwater controls could be improved, though, as they're standing in the way of an excellent platforming experience.

The LEGO Movie Videogame delivers what is expected: a good movie-to-game conversion, plenty of the series' trademark humour and a top notch soundtrack. That being said, several flaws remain, such as the lack of an online multiplayer, a low difficulty level and a short lifespan, liabilities which stand in the way of making this a universally-appealing title.

This crossover between Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright brings the best of two worlds into one game. With its very well thought and executed concept, Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright is set to charm fans of both series alike. It does miss out, though, on the quantity and quality of the puzzles offered, as well as on the lacklustre outcome of its plot, perhaps a casualty of such an ambitious crossover.

The versatility of the Kirby franchise is only surpassed by Kirby's capacity to absorb enemies and their respective abilities. Triple Deluxe, however, does not go all the way through and is rather an example of a classic Kirby game transplanted to the 3DS. Level design starts to show some fatigue but Kirby and his enemies are as delightful as ever in their colourful ways and 3D depth perception effects.

9 / 10 - Mario Kart 8
May 14, 2014

Nintendo promised and delivered. Mario Kart 8 is the shiniest star in one of the shiniest series in the world of videogames. Perfectly fine-tuned gameplay, a leap in the right direction for the online component, a magnificent audio-visual pillar worthy of the Wii U and an immensely fun and absorbing experience, whether solo or multiplayer, making Mario Kart 8 an instant and timeless classic.

Child of Light is nothing short of a delight of appealing mechanics and marvelous artistic component, set to enchant those looking for a charming RPG. Its storylines could use some additional development, as well as more tasks outside the plot's line, but this remains a solid choice.

5 / 10 - Putty Squad
Jun 1, 2014

As a remake of a game that did not leave its mark, Putty Squad does not stand out. Its glitches and flaws, which include a serious lack of fluidity in some areas, make it a less-than-enjoyable platformer, which should only be considered by those who truly wish to try every title in the genre.

Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails is more than a throwback to the 16-bit era, it's an action-packed challenge on rails, guaranteed to keep the most demanding players closely around its simple, yet demanding concept. The jumping mechanics could use a more accessible learning curve, but anyone who plays this will have their entertainment needs properly fulfilled.

The JRPG style is not going through its finest hour and it’s not Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars that will lift it upwards. While the battle system is very well implemented and the breeding function is a welcome detail, nearly everything else is missing: an involving narrative, a captivating exploration, charismatic characters and appealing graphics are all absent from this lacklustre and overall tedious production.

8 / 10 - Pushmo World

With a gameplay that is as easy to learn as it is addictive and an immense variety of puzzles, made even bigger by the puzzle editor, Pullblox World has all the conditions to become a very welcome member of any Wii U family.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition, a title as long and exaggerated as the fun and entertainment this game provides. One of the Wii U's best works, Guacamelee's enhanced version plays like a a "metroidvania" type of game and fills the spaces with a delightful atmosphere, an exquisite artistic component and an affection which is set to grow in the player's heart.

Gravity Badgers is full of good intentions. Its plentiful contents and interest mechanics have everything that would amount to a fun and compelling challenge…but its repetitiveness and exaggerated resource to those very same mechanics end up leaving the player weary and tired.

6 / 10 - Armillo
Aug 12, 2014

It's well presented, the control system is properly tuned and its difficulty level is balanced, qualities which amount to an entertaining work. Nevertheless, there are several flaws which should not be overlooked in a final game and which require a thorough revision, such as an irregular frame rate.
