Taking a mix of their own Guilty Gear or BlazBlue series and combining it with a little of Marvel vs. Capcom and surrounding it with a Dragon Ball coat of paint was just the recipe for Arc System Works with Dragon Ball FighterZ that makes it the game fans of the franchise have truly been waiting for all these years.
There is definitely a giant sized hole on the Nintendo Switch where a new Super Smash Bros. game should be right now, leaving fans to look for an alternate. Brawlout definitely fits that bill as a potential fill-in for the time being, but you’re going to have to overlook a number of flaws to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
With exploration being the key, InnerSpace is a great candidate for picking up and playing on the game when you have a few minutes here and there. This makes InnerSpace even more appealing on the Nintendo Switch, as long as you don’t mind the game’s hands-off approach with telling you what you need to do.
Shadow Of The Colossus is a rare solo cinematic experience that, when originally released, many praised and loved. Years later, it still holds up favorably against the test of time in a remake that gives it a fresh coat of paint. And what a sparkling, pristine coat it is, while not changing anything that made the game so highly touted back in the day. New features like photo mode and next-generation technology allowing for smoother frame rate only improve upon the formula that made the game an instant classic. Now, an entirely new generation is able to enjoy this masterpiece in what is a new benchmark for future remakes to achieve.
Combining the well received Until Dawn and PSVR yet again, this time not on rails, The Inpatient seemed like a great idea in thought, but it ends up being a disappointment for the most part. The Inpatient itself is only about two hours long for one playthrough and the story and alternate outcomes really do little to make you want to come back for more.
Not only does Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology add a few quality of life fixes that were not in the original, but it also adds new content that is really enjoyable. As a fairly underrated gem from the Nintendo DS library, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology really deserves this second chance it is getting that hopefully may lead to a much requested sequel.
Wulverblade is a solid beat ’em up arcade title that is beautifully wrapped in pleasing aesthetics. It covers a well-trodden path seen in numerous games before, but it manages to deliver an experience that is still its own. The combat is satisfying, especially in terms of sound, but it is held back from being a more rewarding experience due to limiting control factors. Furthermore, the entertaining cooperative play completely forgoes online connectivity, meaning two people will have to play on one machine. Still, hindrances and all, there’s something enjoyable about Wulverblade’s loop that helps carry it through the somewhat short campaign.
Musou style games often struggle to stand out from the rest of the pack as a result of the similar gameplay and mission structures. Dynasty Warriors 9 goes against this trend by managing to expand on the typical musou formula with a big open world experience for the first time in the series that pairs well with the familiar gameplay and story, which all combine to make a very enjoyable game that are built for veterans and newcomers alike.
Crossing Souls is teeming with personality, even if it all isn’t originally its own. It expertly weaves the nostalgic tones of 80s media, covering its lesser parts to an extent. The crew may not be as lively as the environments they find themselves in, but utilizing them for general platforming and combat is enjoyable enough. Crossing Souls will no doubt pique the interest of those currently enveloped in this re-emerging stylized culture.
For those that really enjoyed a return to the SNES era of RPGs with I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear will be right up your alley. There aren’t too many things that feel incredibly innovative, but the sense of nostalgia and solid game mechanics make Lost Sphear at least worth checking out once it gets a price drop.
Those coming from the original Dissidia Final Fantasy games on PSP are certainly going to be surprised by what ends up being a very different kind of game. The move to 3-on-3 battles isn’t a bad thing, but the overall lack of features and almost too involved combat may make you want to stay away from Dissidia Final Fantasy NT for now.
Looking to remake a classic like Secret of Mana was certainly a tall task, with Square Enix succeeding in some ways and disappointing in others. While overhauling too much might have seemed blasphemous, the lack of any real non-superficial changes gives you less reason to play this remake of Secret of Mana versus just pulling out the original and playing it instead, even if this is a solid remake overall.
Verdict Building off the foundation of Metal Gear Solid V, Metal Gear Survive had some potential that was mostly squandered, though still far from being an awful game. The co-op missions with friends can be fun and the game itself performs well enough, but the tedious structure of the game and the inclusion of awful microtransactions make Metal Gear Survive one you might want to think about skipping.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance strips away the fantasy from RPG and replaces it with something infinitely more dirty and relatable. This is one role-playing experience that is spilling over with ambition at every turn, even if it gets in its own way from time to time. The hardcore, survivalist, tactical players out there will likely have a field day with everything on offer in spite of the flaws present, while the rest may find themselves turned away by the cumbersome systems connecting it all.
While you typically knew what to expect from a new Sword Art Online game in the past, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet turns that idea on its head with a completely different third person shooter experience. It certainly is nowhere near the best RPG out there right now, but getting to jump into the world of Gun Gale Online this time around makes Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet well worth it for fans of the series.
Call of Duty: WWII – The Resistance is a solid foundation to build future content on and sets a high bar for all future DLC related to the fourteenth installment of the franchise. This is what players want to see when it comes to downloadable content — gameplay, maps, weapons and an evolution of the original experience seen in the base game. Everyone should be looking forward to where the DLC goes next and, of course, how the story of zombies continues to develop.
With once again fantastic combat and movement style, Attack on Titan 2 is definitely worth checking out for fans of the series.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life brings Kazuma Kiryu's long-running tale to an end and does so on a high note. This is the wacky-yet-serious Yakuza vision fully realized, or at least it is damn close to it. Newcomers and established fans alike will find plenty to love in this father figure's quest for answers and revenge in a world where everything can be resolved with shirtless brawls. This powerful conclusion to the Dragon of Dojima's story must not be missed.
With a cast of charming characters and captivating story that areinterwoven with downright fun gameplay, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is without a doubt going to be right in the thick of the Game of the Year races at the end of the year as one of the next modern classics.
For anybody looking for the next grand scale RPG on the market, The Alliance Alive really isn't going to be that. Those looking for yet another fun little adventure focused on characters though will likely find plenty of hours of enjoyment out of The Alliance Alive.
