Respawning's Reviews

Dec 31, 2016

The game, however, doesn't come without detriments - As a rougelike, you can expect the game to kick your arse, over, and over, and over again, especially when first starting out; learning different attack patterns and clearing hectic rooms can be a pain, and can easily harm your enjoyment when you get owned by an inescapable attack in some later instances - Another issue is the lack of proper stat tracking and item explanation; whilst on PC this can be remedied by using Missing HUD 2, console and portable players are stuck up creek without a paddle, sadly. This can be annoying when you need to quit out and check exactly what an item does, only to be confused and have it ruin an amazing run. However, once you learn more of the game, overcome the difficulty, and start to experience some of the wacky and crazy combos you can execute, I'm sure that no matter what kind of gamer you are, you'll be hooked!

8.5 / 10.0 - Watch Dogs 2
Nov 23, 2016

Whilst I have not ventured into the multiplayer very much mode as of yet (That section of the review will be coming soon!) I have found a lot to love in Watch Dogs 2. It is not a perfect game by any means but it is an incredibly fun experience with lovable characters and side stories which I highly recommend picking up.

7th Dragon III: Code VFD proves to be yet another star-studded JRPG to add to your 3DS collection - Filled to the brim with a lengthy 50-70 hour Story Mode, varied and interesting dungeons and locales, and more compelling characters than you can shake a stick at, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD certainly delivers.

8.5 / 10.0 - Rive
Sep 12, 2016

Overall, Rive is a riveting romp throughout, and continues to impress, challenge and entertain even a few hours in; the world and challenge keep puling me back, and I believe that you'll find the same sense of daring danger infect you too.

8.5 / 10.0 - Yakuza 0
Jan 19, 2017

An incredibly competent brawling RPG that can sometimes collapse under it’s own weight with a huge amount of boring minigames (excluding Karaoke) that leave little to no impact in a title that has fantastic elements better than the sum of it’s parts. After playing a title like this, I wish Sega would push more games out for the mature market as this is clearly what the excel at. I already see the end of year countdown now: “Top 10 Suprises of 2017 Number 1: Yakuza 0”. Well done Sega, much much much more of this please.

8.5 / 10.0 - Sniper Elite 4
Feb 26, 2017

I had tons of fun with this game and found myself often going back into the previous missions to try and find the collectibles or simply do the mission a little better, whilst this may seem standard for a lot of players it has been a long while since a game has provided me with such levels of fun and variety that had me crawling back for more.

Personally, as this was my introduction into the Hitman franchise, I love the attention to detail, and the depth of some of the actions you can perform - It felt, however, that Hitman 2016 was being a little bit more lenient than it should've with some of the points of suspicion, but overall the gameplay is addicting, deep and methodical, with plenty of room for experimentation and freedom, to allow you to do things your way rather than adhering to a set number of steps in most instances. I've never played or even seen a Hitman game before, and Hitman 2016 really does make me regret that. I would personally rate Hitman 2016 an 8.5 / 10.

Overall I think this is a must buy for any psvr owner and would be a fantastic game to showcase the fun you can have.

8.5 / 10.0 - Far Cry 5
May 5, 2018

I had a heap of fun with this game and it’s definitely my favourite in the series. I wasn’t bored for a second and cannot wait to go back to it some time; I felt I did rush it a little as I wanted to get to God of War, but I would have definitely spent more time on it had that not been the case. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the ending of the game, but I don’t want to spoil that. Trust me pick up this game, you won’t regret it.

8.5 / 10.0 - The Evil Within 2

Almost all my complaints from the first game have been addressed and handled better. And to top it off, the things that I adored about the first game have been improved to an extremely high degree of polish. I seriously recommend this for anyone looking for something spooky to play this Halloween.

So, what’s my final verdict on Monster Hunter: World? All in all, Monster Hunter: World is a beautiful, terrifyingly primal experience that sits among the best… Whilst also being somewhat of a regression for this beloved franchise – Beginners are both wholeheartedly accepted, yet left adrift by a lack of guidance or assistance, and the smaller pool of monsters leaves a lot of room to be filled (Possibly through DLC or expansions); Monster Hunter: World throws players, new and old, into a brand new world, with brand new experiences lying in wait around every corner… It just needed that little bit more polish to make the deal even sweeter.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth wants to kick your arse. It wants to beat you down. It wants to be ruthless. However that feeling when you finally nail that strategy; when you overcome a floor that was kicking you down for weeks; when you beat that FOE or that boss that stopped you dead in your tracks… …Well, there’s no better feeling, really.

8.5 / 10.0 - Lost Sphear
Jan 30, 2018

So here I am, gushing over a nostalgia filled love letter to classic JRPG’s when all you really wanted to know was: Is it any good? Well that depends on you as a person really, Lost Sphear is one of those game’s I have found really difficult to score. For old school fans of the genre I would say that Lost Sphear is an absolute must play however as a game on it’s own merits it relies a little too heavily on nostalgia to really come out on it’s own.

8.5 / 10.0 - Attack on Titan 2
Mar 25, 2018

At the end of the day you have a thrill ride of fun set in the world of Attack of Titan. As a fan of the show I would definitely pick this game up for the platform of your choice. While the Switch will be slightly less impressive visually, the ability to take it where you want can be a game changer for some. You’ve got some excellent gameplay with plenty of content and that’s exactly what a game about Attack on Titan should be. If you can look past the repetitive nature and minor hiccups then you’ll get a good 25+ hours at minimum.

8.5 / 10.0 - A Way Out
Apr 27, 2018

There’s not a tonne more that I can say as it is a short game, but it’s an awesome short game. All I’ll say is find a good mate, set aside a day and do it one sitting with a few beers. You’ll not have as much co-op fun this year as you will here.

8.5 / 10.0 - Gravel
Mar 5, 2018

So to finish this all up, I’m going to say one final time that this is possibly my favourite game of 2018 so far. It holds high esteem in my book. It may have a few problems but I highly recommend playing this game.

8.5 / 10.0 - The Persistence
Aug 10, 2018

There really isn’t a great deal I can put this game down for, i’m not sure how long it is but I’ve been playing for just under 4 hours and there seems to be a lot more to it. Plus there’s almost an endless feel to it as you can just keep playing the same rooms over and over to harvest stem cells and collect fab tokens to improve your build. It’s the first VR game since Resident Evil that’s made me want to keep coming back for more and has put a little more faith in virtual reality format, i can only hope for more of the same. This game is definitely worth the price tag and is a must for any PSVR user.

8.5 / 10.0 - Flat Heroes

Overall, Parallel Hero’s first game is a neat puzzle title. A decent difficulty curve, influx of new challenges, fresh palettes to unlock, and a truly amazing soundtrack help make the title a great experience regardless of the mode.

8.4 / 10.0 - Aragami
Mar 23, 2018

All in all, Aragami is a neat indie stealth title. The plot is alright, the stealth mechanics and abilities are decent, and the levels are just fine (though more verticality would have been nice). It’s a game that’s beautiful in presentation, sans some stiff animation, has great sound design, and is perfect to fill a day off, with a total gameplay time clocking in around 15 or so hours (if you take your time, and don’t co-op it).

8.4 / 10.0 - Phantom Doctrine
Sep 8, 2018

Overall, Phantom Doctrine is an admirable exploration of Cold War espionage, using and improving upon the core gameplay offered by the XCOM series. If you loved that franchise, you will love this: Playing Phantom Doctrine just feels so satisfying, with a wide variety of options at your disposal when initiating and conducting missions. If they had a reference document in-game for those times you miss the pop-up windows, I'd have given this game a higher score. As is, I'll still be playing this for a fair while to come.
