Critic Reviews for God Wars: The Complete Legend

Ultimately, God Wars: The Complete Legend is both a delightfully classic simulation JRPG experience and a small glimpse on how the genre could evolve without abandoning its turn-based structure.

In many ways God Wars is like a new Picross game; it's more of the same. The Japanese folklore narrative offers a slight twist, but the script is painfully dull and repetitive. If you're dipping your toe into the genre or only have time for one of these, we'd sit tight to see what Intelligent Systems has up its sleeve with the upcoming Fire Emblem: Three Houses. If you're a strategy junkie after a fix, it gets the job done with all the mechanics and systems you'd expect – but nothing new or novel.

God Wars: The Complete Legend is a new and richer version of the previous game launched in 2017, however it shows some graphical imperfections and its content does not show any particular improvement even on the technical side. Anyway, this JRPG sounds very familiar to us and it can be enjoyed very well both on TV or in handheld version.

Fans of turn-based strategy games who are looking for a deep combat system should check out God Wars: The Complete Legend, however, don’t expect a lot from the story. As for those who have already finished it once, there is a lack of meaningful new content.

God Wars is too Japanese in tone, aesthetic and design to ever have much of a hope of reaching a mainstream audience, but as a culturally relevant artifact, anyone who is interested in seeing how a game can explore ancient folk tales and spirituality in an interesting and engaging manner should not pass up this opportunity

The fact of the matter is neither is compelling nor are they offensively poor. Despite logging dozens of hours, I don't care about these characters nor do I feel like the battles have changed dramatically in a very long time. A fan of this genre would get some fun out of God Wars, and I would be lying if I said I didn't, but the fun to tedium ratio is just far too low. Instead, take a look at better examples of the genre, such as the two Disgaea games already on Switch.

God Wars: The Complete Legend is an enjoyable strategy RPG with a lot of customization options to keep hungry fans chewing. The lore is intriguing and the voice work is great. Unfortunately, it has a few issues that hold it back from greatness. For SRPG fans, there's a lot of meat on the bone. If you're new to the genre, though, you may want to sit a while on this one.

If you are into the tactical RPG at all you may want to give this one a go. There is a bit of a learning curve with a lot of things to keep track of like jobs, sub jobs, and passive traits. Once you get the hang of them it should make for many hours of entertaining battle sequences along with a story that’s more compelling than many other titles on the digital and store shelves.
