Mortal Kombat 11 isn't the ideal MK package and may not even be the best MK package to come along in this console generation. Still, it's a strong package and one that still proves fun to play alone or with friends. It's not a flawless victory, but it's still a victory, nonetheless.

This game is the pinnacle of Mortal Kombat action. Fights are fluid, weighty, and gorgeous to look at. Unfortunately, that tightly-designed gameplay is bogged down by a grindy system of loot and consumables that only serves to artificially extend your playtime in the most tedious ways imaginable. There is so much heart and care put into this game, from the combat to the gorgeous visuals and memorable story, but that effort feels nullified by the desperate attempt to twist an iconic video game franchise into just another endlessly online service game.

Nearly 30 years later, Mortal Kombat still deserves to hang in the top-tier of fighting games. With improved visuals, overhauled mechanics and exciting strategic potential, MK 11 offers a brilliant fighting experience. Unfortunately, the overall fun is bogged down with miserable modern-day business practices that frequently pump the brakes on your enjoyment. The Fight is the thing, however, and as long as the fists are flying, then Mortal Kombat 11 packs a helluva punch.

There's a lot to love in Mortal Kombat 11. It's a fantastic fighter with a roster of 25 varied characters, tons of customization options, beautiful graphics, and one of the best story modes in a fighting game. It's a shame that modes like the Krypt and Towers of Time inject annoyance and tedium into what was an excellent experience. The progression is complex and obtuse, when it should be easy and straightforward. MK 11 could been an all-time best, but it's just a contender.

Featuring an entertaining time-bending storyline and a better fighting system than ever before Mortal Kombat 11’s persistence in grinding and cheap mechanics nearly spoil everything outside of the fight.

Mortal Kombat 11 is the latest and greatest entry in the long-running fighting game series focused on excessive murder and crazy Asian-inspired supernatural things. The formula is bloodier, more refined, and improved upon, and this feels like the definitive Mortal Kombat game.

But for completionists or Mortal Kombat super-fans then perhaps the stingy nature of ‘unlocking everything' will take its toll.

It's impressive that Mortal Kombat 11 plays as well as it does on Switch, but it loses a lot when you're on the go and away from wi-fi.

For fans of the series, Mortal Kombat 11 is probably the best they’re going to get for a while, as it certainly ends the current storyline NetherRealm started in MK 9. Save from many missing characters, fans will be pleased to see how much time and care NetherRealm Studios put into the game and will have some great time with it. It’s unfortunate some of the modes require way too much skill to beat.

Mortal Kombat 11 offers a neat playing experience, perhaps a little more visceral than the Injustice games which tie with the DC franchise and therefore have obvious limitations. As a next stop for the MK series, this game ticks all the right boxes in every department which is good. However, it is plagued with elements needing a closer inspection and fixing. As it stands, MK 11 is worthwhile for the asking price and if you’re a fan a no-brainer purchase. That said, if you’re not a fan of the comical gore and rather serious overtones then this is perhaps not worth an immediate look-in, rather a wait-and-see until it’s up to scratch or until it drops in price.

There are some speed bumps along the way that prevent this game from being truly amazing, but for what it is I am thoroughly enjoying my time with it.

Mortal Kombat 11 is both the franchise at its best and at its worst with great fighting mechanics that are a big step forward combined with the bell and whistles of the service model that currently plagues the industry.

While the game is a stunning visual masterpiece, with a more in-depth fighting system catering to the pro circuit and silky smooth online services, I cannot help but feel disappointed by what NRS did with their microtransactions and overall loot cycle.

When I started writing this review I had mixed feelings about Mortal Kombat 11. The story was a blast and the core fighting mechanics are fantastic, but the badly judged progression system was such a massive grind. Since then, though, I’ve had to re-write chunks of this review to reflect the updates that NetherRealm have put out. I can’t speak for the future and where things might go, but for now they’ve managed to really improve the economy. Hopefully they’ll continue on the path of goodness. So, before the updates Mortal Kombat 11 was going to score less, but now I feel happy giving it….

Mortal Kombat 11 feels like a celebration for this series. Comes with a refined, precise and familiar gameplay, it has a lot of content to be played solo or against other players, and it offers enough accessibility mechanics to became friendly to newcomers without compromise more challenging experiences.

NetherRealm bolsters their penchant for delivering the most accessible and effort-filled fighting games around, even if Mortal Kombat 11 does feel a little overstuffed with Things To Do.
