Codemasters' first shot at the WRC license is underwhelming. Despite a responsive driving model and decent rally stages, EA Sports WRC offers an awkward career mode with shallow team management. Even the presentation quality is inconsistent, with some bothersome stuttering.

EA Sports WRC is the first of its kind and although the result is bittersweet, it has solid foundations that could take the franchise to a better level. The legacy of Colin McRae's installments is there, Codemasters was a guardian of it for 2 decades and, of course, there is a vote of confidence for what they will do in future editions. Unfortunately, this debut is not what was expected and amounts to a bump in the road after a period of good results in their racing game launches. EA Sports WRC isn't unplayable, nor is it a disaster, but it's far from great, although there is room for improvement with the passage of time and updates, so perhaps you could consider it for later.

You may have sounded a little disappointed when describing many of its sections, but as sometimes this is about sensations and not so much about striking features that each studio marks in bold in their press releases, EA Sports WRC is a great Rally game. It's nothing more and nothing less, what we expected from Codemasters, a Dirt Rally, but licensed. The problem is that it doesn't go any further or surprise those of us who follow the launch of the annual WRC. It has some details, such as being able to create our own WRC, but the rest smacks of having already seen it, something that graphics technology doesn't exactly help.

EA Sports WRC is a very approachable rally experience with a wide variety of modes, but for seasoned fans, it might be a bit too vanilla and lacking in thrills.

For me, EA Sports WRC lays the foundations for what Codemasters wants to offer. Offered at a lower price than most AAA titles, it features a complete career mode with the introduction of the 3 main categories. The on-track sensations are quite good, with an accomplished visual rendering. Nevertheless, and despite the presence of several accessibility options, the game does not offer the possibility of restarting a portion of a special stage. As a result, you have to continue to the end or start from the beginning. A surprising choice, especially as this is a fairly recurrent option in games of the genre. Chaotic menus and a lack of finish in certain areas may also disappoint players. The game is aimed primarily at fans of the old DiRT Rally series, without taking any risks. The base is there, now it's time to improve it!

WRC has paid off for its long development process. There are more, longer stages, plenty of vehicles and various modes to keep you in the game. Once the technical pain is out of the way, there is no need to go back to Dirt Rally 2.0.

It should have been a clear candidate for racing game of the year. But the reality after the release is a bit sobering. Significant performance issues, not entirely convincing visuals and some game modes that are rather limited and unrefined, plus a clunky menu system. On the other hand, There is an interesting driving model, high-quality sound and excellent track design.

EA Sports WRC is definitely not a let down and is a more than worthy successor to Dirt Rally 2.0. Even though I had some concerns about a new game engine and wondered if that gameplay would translate, thankfully those fears were unfounded. Make no mistake, this is a solid racing game featuring plenty of cars, plenty of locations (plus loads of stages within them) and excellent gameplay be that via wheel or pad.

That said, the most important thing about EA Sports WRC is that I’m pretty sure I’ll get addicted to the moments its recreation of rallying can provide across its plethora of modes. As with Dirt Rally 2.0, it’s those simple, brief moments when you get into a perfect adrenaline-fuelled flow and feel - just for a second - like you are as good as Colin McRae, that’ll keep me coming back for more, no matter how many trees I hit in between them. I'm pleased and relieved to report that post-acquisition Codemasters still understands what makes a good rally game tick.

EA Sports WRC is another good racing game from Codemasters. Besides some minor hiccups from the technical side of that game, it’s an excellent game for fans of the DiRT series to jump into.

EA Sports WRC rarely feels celebratory of the sport in a way that previous rally games have – often, it feels designed out of obligation.

EA Sports WRC is a rally simulator that is brimming with content, but leaves you feeling uneven. Many modes and options feel half-throttled, as if they don't give everything they could, while the technical section doesn't take advantage of all the power of current systems, in addition to presenting flaws.

EA Sports WRC delivers an incredible legacy of the WRC, with new features that should entertain players who are fans of rally games. It has a visual limitation, incompatible with the current generation, whose customization proposal tries to overcome the existing flaws. It stands out, but with limitations.
