Dead Rising 4 evokes much of the same style and quirkiness that the first two games did, but ultimately isn’t able to spread that fun across the entire experience.

Dead Rising 4 marks the end of the series for as we knew it. It is a new starting point for a saga that has decided to abandon any survival elements, transforming itself in a rowdy and disengaged action game.

Much like the “Roaring Thunder” weapon, Dead Rising 4 banks on nostalgia and humor. While not much new exists in the beat ‘em up genre, this title has a lot of fun moments, delivering an enjoyable return to a zombie-infested Willamette.

Dead Rising 4 sees the franchise's original hero forced back into action in a sequel that's bigger than any entry in the series before, yet feels more empty and bereft of excitement than its predecessors.

Dead Rising 4’s raw zombie carnage impresses, but its story and technical problems leave it dead on arrival.

If you've played Dead Rising 3, you'll know what to expect from Dead Rising 4. There's blood, guts, gore, and fun to be found in spades, but it isn't a massive leap forward from its predecessor.

Dead Rising 4 is fun, silly and gleefully absurd in its execution of thousands upon thousands of undead fodder as it aims to make the apocalypse fun again.

Your enjoyment of Dead Rising 4 will entirely depend on how long you can tolerate its multiple novelties. The novelty of killing thousands of zombies (again); of screwing around with crafting silly weapons and wearing dumb outfits (again); of returning to Willamette (again), this time with its Christmas theme; and of playing as Frank West (again).

Dead Rising 4 is definitely not the best chapter of the saga. The PC version seems stable and well optimized but it cannot fix some problems of the game, such as a weak character design and a redundant gameplay

Dead Rising 4 is easily the greatest game of all the franchise. It basically offers the same and addictive concept from the previous games but with many corrections, changes and additions that refreshes the overall experience. It doesn’t matter if you are veteran fan from the series or someone who is just starting with it, the game will make you understand the delight behind killing hordes of zombies.

Dead Rising 4 is a lot of fun. The removal of the timer might not bode well with fans of the series, but it does allow a sense of freedom to move within the game at a player’s own accord. That all said, there just isn’t enough to keep you engaged apart from the main storyline; killing zombies with crazy theatrical weapons is fun, but after a while it just becomes too much of a grind.

While I found myself frustrated at points few and far between, I enjoyed my time with Dead Rising 4. It’s a charming, fun romp through a zombie wasteland who sets itself apart from other zombie stories with a sense of humor while still paying homage to those that came before it. If you’re looking for a merry time this holiday season, don’t be caught dead not checking out this Christmas slay ride, as Frank West would probably say.

Dead Rising 4 is undoubtedly a great zombie game, with Capcom Vancouver nailing the open-world and tone once more, but the lack of true psychos in the world does detract from the overall experience. It’s no Dead Rising 3, but it’s still a bloody good game.

I'm not sure if straight to video, shallow Christmas film was what the Capcom Vancouver were aiming for here, but it's what we've got.

It's not an instant classic nor is a complete misstep and while it feels like the series is nearing it's end Dead Rising 4 is a fun and entertaining entry.

Dead Rising 4 lacks both the conviction to truly strike out on its own and the features and mechanics that will please franchise fans. As is, it's a game that is bland at its best and downright contemptuous at its worst.

Think Bruce Willis from Die Hard being thrown into The Walking Dead during Christmas time and voila you have Dead Rising 4. The fourth addition of this open-world action packed game is the most zombie filled yet but don’t feel like you need to have played its predecessors to enjoy this one. With optional tutorials getting you through the basics you will quickly find yourself becoming distracted finding new and better ways to kill zombies before you realise that you have forgotten about the main storyline. So please excuse me, I have to return to humming Christmas tunes while I kill some more zombies!

Fans of Dead Rising will lament everything this latest Christmas-themed sequel has lost, but it's still a pleasant-enough time for those who want a mindless zombie-killing sandbox.
