Battle Chasers: Nightwar shows what an independent studio that cares about their graphic novel IP can do. Through hours of RPG combat and dungeon exploring, the game manages to stay interesting and fresh, which makes it difficult to put down. It's clear that developer Airship Syndicate has created a unique and fun turn-based RPG, but most of all they breathed life in the Battle Chasers universe to expose the series to a new group of fans while satisfying the old ones with a brand new adventure.

It can be extremely difficult to introduce a new game into a genre long dominated by one company and franchise, but Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a modern and expertly executed take on everything turn-based RPGs introduced to gamers so many years ago. It's a reminder that old ways don't have to die away; they just need the right people to hone in on what made the genre work in the first place.

I didn't go into Battle Chasers: Nightwar expecting much of anything, given the development studio's relative youth as a company and the spotty record of Kickstarted games. However, Nightwar's focus on style and character, coupled with a mostly excellent combat system, kept me hooked for much longer than I had imagined. Whatever your familiarity with its source material, this game builds a beautiful world with a surprising amount of depth just beneath the surface.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar isn't the new quality in the genre, but it's still a fantastic jRPG for anyone.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar features a deep and rewarding battle system that is the crux of the entire experience. Save-erasing crashes, a passive narrative, and balancing issues can't help Nightwar compete in a year where RPGs reign supreme.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar brings together some really cool character design with a very enjoyable, intense and, at times, punishing combat system. It’s handling of progression is just right, with maybe a slight slip towards the end, thanks to its stream of new abilities and variants of foes that require a different way of going about punching their faces.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar cast, amazing soundtrack and art direction more than makes up for its dull and often grindy combat mechanics.

I'm glad that Battle Chasers: Nightwar was finally released, despite never being on my radar. This title is a breath of fresh air with several innovative battle mechanics, enjoyable characters and a return to my beloved turn-based gaming. The story could have been better, but for those looking for more Battle Chasers, you're going to be in love with it.

Battle Chasers : Nightwar ends up being a solid RPG with some deep combat systems and interesting components, in a lovely universe. But beware of the fact that it needs you to grind a lot, and so accept redondance and a few huge breaks in the progression, and that some crashing issues and bugs can truly poison your experience on PS4.

Battle Chasers: Nightwars' combat and activity-dense world scratch the JRPG itch, even if the storytelling and character development leave a fair bit to be desired. Its attractive dungeons and outdoor regions are fun to get lost in, and there are just enough hidden treasures to claim to make exploration rewarding in a more than visual capacity. I'd be very pleased to see more turn-based indie RPGs along the same lines as Nightwar in the future - and the ending heavily suggests this won't be the last we see of this universe in RPG form.

Like the original comic book series, Battle Chasers: Nightwar looks fantastic but feels a bit hollow. The game's JRPG battle system and Diablo-style dungeons are rock solid but don't bring many new ideas to the table. If you're really into Joe Madureira's art or grinding for loot, you'll find plenty to like here, but the general RPG audience may find the game slightly lacking in flavor. Not bad at all, just a little flat. Perhaps it's unsurprising that a video game, based on a comic book, based on earlier video games feels like it's spreading its inspiration a bit thin.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar hits a few bumps along the road, but overall, Airship Syndicate’s debut title is a resounding success, thanks to its excellent combat system and gorgeous art style.

Battle Chasers is a game full of attractions that will last for more than 40 hours of fun. It’s not important whether you noticed Joe Madureira’s new game because of its jRPG heritage, its connection to a series of comic books or its extremely pretty graphics. All these reasons are good, because the game is good. Very good!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a fine example of how to iterate and improve upon a tried-and-true game genre wth its take on a modernized turn-based RPG. It's far from perfect, but the combat system alone is engaging enough to warrant a recommendation for any fan of old-school JRPG-style adventures.

A beautiful JRPG throwback with deep combat, held back by punishing difficulty spikes and far too many technical issues on PS4.

There is so much to love about Battle Chasers's take on the JRPG. Its strategic elements, well-crafted characters (although the attempts at self-referential humour with Red Monika's physique are not always successful), brilliantly judged battle system, and satisfying crafting all combine with a good, albeit not groundbreaking, fantasy narrative. Sadly it's plagued by frequent crashes which impact the score at launch, but this game is otherwise easy to recommend for fans of the genre.

This game is a pleasure to play and experience thanks to its many homages to classic games from the old school JRPG era. It's a no brainer must-play for fans of the genre.
