In an indie market so heavily saturated with retro-inspired games, Axiom Verge really stands out as a work of art that deserves to be played by everyone, whether they're looking to reminisce of days past or looking for inspiration to try other games of a similar style for the first time. Axiom Verge shows true devotion to a genre and style and the fruit of one man's labor is absolutely stunning. Axiom Verge is incredibly easy to pick up and impossible to put down.

Do you like hunting for a thing to unlock a door so you can find another thing to unlock another door? Then this is your game.

Axiom Verge is a fun, challenging game. While some aspects of the narrative -- particularly its protagonist -- have rough edges to them, it remains intriguing and mysterious through to its climax. It looks and sounds great, and offers a diversity of weapons rarely seen in games of its type. Easy to get lost in, its sizeable world has a density to match, with hidden rooms and collectibles only available through creative application of acquired abilities. And while the basic gameplay will likely be very familiar, there are a fair few fresh touches which should pleasantly surprise players.

Axiom Verge isn't a perfect homage to Metroid, but we still enjoyed our time in this strange, familiar world.

I actually enjoyed Axiom Verge better than Super Metroid. It is a must play for fans of the Metroidvania formula.

I could not have enjoyed Axiom Verge any more than i did. It is not a perfect game however. Getting lost is not hard and having no "go to" indicator made it no easier at all. Definitely captures the feel of classics like Metroid, and a game i absolutely recommend. Weapons and collectibles galore, a must play for metroidvania fans.

A game that's mechanically similar to the Metroid of old, yet still manages to have its own identity with some truly awesome concepts. It's gorgeous, challenging and a delight to play.

Axiom Verge brings its own style here and offers a familiar yet totally different experience on an alien world, with an eerie soundtrack and a story that is interesting, if a bit light. Fans of heavy exploration, no hand holding and interesting weapons will have an absolute blast, and when they're finished can jump right back into the game with its speed runner mode. Axiom Verge is fantastic addition to any fan of the genre. Review copy of game provided by publisher.

Put another way, it's a game that needs to be left unattended, so that you can return to it with fresh eyes and discover the surprises that seem to sprout while you're away.

I have been waiting, and craving a game like Axiom Verge and it delivers in almost every way.

Without a doubt, Axiom Verge is one of the most complete games I have played in a long time. Not only was it created entirely by Tom Happ, but the passion he has for the game clearly has shined through the final product. Surprisingly the game has an intriguing narrative, complete with plenty of hidden notes and messages; some will even require translating. The game even contains a Speedrun option on the main menu, eliminating the dialogue and cutscenes, and standardizing some of the randomized elements in the game. Tom has even added a checkpoint hud, allowing you to keep track of your pace through each boss. I may have only found 66% of the items, and uncovered 87% of the map, but that hasn't stopped me from instantly hopping back into the game for a second run. As far as "Metroidvania" games go, Axiom Verge sits at the top of my personal favorite list.

Axiom Verge isn't the best in its class, but it takes a familiar structure and adds a tool belt loaded with interesting weapons and gadgets. It's a worthwhile adventure that entices you to unearth its secrets and rewards you for doing so.

It's as much a living homage as it is a natural successor to Nintendo's 2D Metroid games.

Axiom Verge uses Metroid's building blocks to create a fantastic adventure that can stretch for hours if you want it to … though maybe not always in a good way. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but even I started getting obsessive over my map and item completion rates. I'll just leave it to the rest of the community to fill in the blanks.

Axiom Verge is just the kind of retro-fitted kick in the pants that PlayStation 4 owners needed. While the story and map could've used a little ironing over, the game delivers excitement aplenty, especially with some of the bigger bosses. The diversity of weapons and tools you'll run across will keep you busy as well. Kudos to Tom Happ (with some help from Dan Adelman) for bringing us back some retro goodness for our new system. Now, sequel please. (Or at the very least, that PS Vita port we were promised…)

Axiom Verge plays so closely to the original Metroid game that I'm wondering if it was meant to be a tribute or an imitation.

Axiom Verge starts off as an homage to classic 8-bit games like Metroid, but grows into a fantastic game in its own right.
