Grasshopper Manufacture, XSEED Games and Marvelous’s No More Heroes 3 was awesome. From the epic voice acting, the craziness of, well everything, into the gameplay and presentation, Travis’ adventure was solid all around. Lasting anywhere between a dozen or so hours depending on how invested you are in the side content, there’s a NG+ just ready and waiting for you to go back for more!
Brok the InvestiGator is a wonderful point and click game with beat-em-up elements that I absolutely adore. Aside from some minor issues with combat and the ending sequence, this game is truly one of my favorites of 2022. In fact, this family friendly game kept me engaged throughout my whole playthrough enough to put it at the top. Brok is definitely a contender for game of the year and I give it a high 9 out of 10!
Overall, I feel like NeverAwake did a really great job of encapsulating some of the best aspects of twin-stick shooters and bullet hell genres, all while wrapping it up in a nice package that tells a surprisingly meaningful yet dark story about a young girl and her troubles. The looping mechanic in the non-boss stages and the sheer amount of customization in the form of accessories is a great way to keep the game fresh all the way through. While the game may get tough at some points, there wasn’t a time where I thought the stages were particularly cheap. Even when frustration began to set in, clearing the stage made it all the more worth it in the end. Fans of twin-stick shooters and bullet hells alike are sure to get a blast out of NeverAwake.
Overall though, while it may be a bit harder to recommend Circus Electrique to those that do not like a challenge, especially a tougher challenge, for those that do? There’s plenty of challenges to be found. Add in a great visual presentation of a Victorian Steampunk’d London and Zen Studios have created something memorable that I’m going to remember for quite some time.
To conclude, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness (man that’s a mouthful) stays true to it’s origins while allowing players to experience Riko’s and Reg’s adventure first hand. Afterwards, you’ll be able to try your hand at surviving the Abyss yourself. If you like crafting and surviving dangerous terrain, then try your hand at becoming a Cave Raider. Just be prepared to die… a lot. Trial and error, but you’ll come out stronger in the end, right? Binary Star gets my review rating of 7 out of 10. Now then, let’s see if you can survive the madness of the Abyss.
Nihon Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails From Zero was worth the wait and I’m happy that NIS America Inc. have localized both it, and the upcoming Trails to Azure in 2023 for us. Well paced and well written storytelling is only ever elevated by the characters that you’ll get to adventure with as they establish what the Special Support Section is all about as they trek through and around the city of Crossbell solving problems big and small.
NBA 2K23 gets so many things right, that I hate that there are a handful of small and one (at least to me) large issue that tarnish an otherwise fantastic package. I will move past those issues, and still continue to play the game heavily however, which is an indication of how good I think it is overall. Hopefully those other wrinkles get ironed out and NBA 2K23 can fully realize its potential, because it is hands-down the best sports game on the market and one that I know I’ll sink dozens (if not hundreds) of hours into over the next year.
Overall, Prinny Presents NIS Classics Vol. 3 is my favourite of the bunch. Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure and La Pucelle: Ragnarock have what I feel is the most heart of all the NIS classic titles. If you’re a fan of the Disgaea series, you can’t go wrong with either title, and even those new to the genre have a wonderful entry with Rhapsody. The updated graphic quality from the PS1 and PS2 era is greatly appreciated, and being able to bring these titles with me on the go with the Switch is amazing.
Overall there is a lot to take in when you first start off Idol Manager, and this may scare off some new players, but if you give the game a chance it is a decent little sim. Idol manager has some good ideas but is a little too hard at times and may get a bit repetitive after a bit as you are staring at the same screen for hours. I enjoyed my time with Idol Manager, and while it’s not perfect in any way, it gets the job done. Give this a try if you’re into hardcore simulation and maybe you will feel the same as me.
Overall, Kokoro Clover Season 1 is a game with a lot of heart, despite a few setbacks here and there. While definitely more on the easier side, it makes a good launching point for getting a younger audience into gaming, anime, or cartoons while also teaching some lessons. Kokoro Clover definitely feels like it would be more at home on the Switch, and while I wish that’s what I had played it on, the PC version worked fine for me. I highly anticipate the release of Season 2, and I hope you will too after playing Kokoro Clover Season 1.
Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed is the very definition of dumb fun, but the key there is that it is still fun. It’s received a very significant visual upgrade, there is a lot to do, and I found it funny far more often than not. That being said, it does show its age through a somewhat rigid quest system that at times doesn’t feel like it makes full use of the toolbox of skills you learn along the way, and there is some stereotyping that occurs that makes the humor sometimes feel somewhat dated. There is plenty to do, but there is a lot of repetition to those tasks so your gameplay mileage may vary.
In all, the Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory / Fallen Legion Revenants packed is a well-made one that should provide north of a couple dozen hours of gameplay. The action / strategy mix is unique and can create for some rewarding experiences, even if the combat and character progression didn’t always have quite as much depth as I like from my more traditional RPGs. The presentation is a solid one and the world that these games are set in is interesting, if perhaps not as deeply explored as I would have liked in the end. Still, the overall experience is worth having for those looking for a different take on the strategy genre.
Overall Way of the Hunter isn’t perfect. It has some issues other than the save file(s) such as the limited number of guns and equipment which was a little disappointing. It could have also used things like the scent mask sprays or doe urine to lure in bucks. Also, some of the equipment is licensed and others not. You can however bring along two other friends with you by playing online which was good. With all that in mind, Way of the Hunter is a decent hunting game. While the heavy simulation may not be for everyone, I am sure that with some improvements it could be even better down the line. Let’s just hope that it’s not all locked behind DLC.
Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 3 As a whole for Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 3: La Pucelle: Ragnarok / Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure package, both of these old school Nippon Ichi Software and NIS America Inc. titles are worth it. Whether as a revisit for those that got to experience them at the time, or as a first time adventure for those that didn’t, the package is solid and it’s an easy recommendation alongside the other two volumes.
Overall, I have to say that Dungeon Munchies is by far one of my favorite games I’ve played recently. I had so much fun with it, and I really enjoyed what it had to offer, especially considering the small size of the team that put it together. If you’re looking for some 2D action platforming experience, I highly recommend you give Dungeon Munchies a try.
Simply put – I loved my time with Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. This is one of the best dungeon crawlers I have played in a very long time. The story and setting is unique and interesting, progression gives a great sense of ownership over your characters and the overall package from presentation to quality of life make Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi one of the most approachable, enjoyable RPG’s I have played in some time.
Overall Dusk Diver 2 makes some improvements while setting itself back from the the first title, making them even out. While I think I preferred the first Dusk Diver, that is from a purely personal perspective, and it by no means makes the sequel any worse, just different. There are noticeable combat improvements, character swapping, and a fun skill tree no matter who you play as. Dusk Diver 2 does suffer from the occasional frame rate issue, and stages can drag on a bit too long sometimes, but are all different themed and entertaining to explore. Dusk Diver 2 is just as good as the first title, and I hope to continue seeing more games from this developer in the future.
Overall, if you are a fan of turn-based tactics or roguelikes? I can’t recommend Mercury Game Studio and Freedom Games Tyrant’s Blessing enough. With plenty of replayability, achievements that make sense to unlock more replayablity, and just an overall fun experience? Tyrant’s Blessing fits any lifestyle whether it’s five minutes for one quick stage or several hours to go through the adventure once or twice, win or lose.
Madden NFL 23 continues to make improvements, and for those thinking it is just a roster update? Give it a go first and you’ll see that it’s a lot more. This is especially true of Franchise Mode, which is where I tend to spend the majority of my time. There’s still some rough edges here and there and room for improvement with some of the languishing modes, but by and large Madden NFL 23 is a great tribute to the series’ namesake and an entertaining game of football.
Naptime and By Aliens have delivered a fun casual puzzle game in Logic Pic. Dropping for the Switch free of the mobile version’s in-app purchases, Logic Pic packs in tons of content with the base game. Co-op and Versus modes turn this previously solitary style of puzzler into fun with friends or family, and extra puzzle packs are available from day one in case you somehow manage to finish the 1,000+ included with the base game. A great choice to round out your Switch library with something you won’t feel awkward sharing with any generation of player.
