Minecraft Legends Review: A Few Blocks Short
Minecraft Legends is a bland strategy title that fails to impress. The core tactical systems are shallow and have been implemented quite poorly and the third person combat and traversal is underwhelming at best. As you are locked to controlling your hero, constructing defenses and ordering troops can also feel quite awkward meaning this experience quickly becomes very tedious. This is really unfortunate, because the story is decent, and has some clever humour. However, this is not enough of a reason to be worth investing time into Minecraft Legends.
Minecraft Legends, at least on Switch, is an average game at very best, but frustrating controls, terrible AI, and repetitive gameplay all come together to make for something that feels substantially beneath the quality of the Minecraft brand. Though we commend the developers for trying something new here, this is easily the worst Minecraft spinoff Mojang has produced. We'd recommend this one to only the most enthusiastic of Minecraft fans, and even then, only if you opt for the PC version. If you don't have a PC or don't want it there, then we'd suggest you pass; Minecraft Legends on the Switch simply isn't worth your time or money.
The building blocks of Legends' personality and hybrid design are there, but Mojang & Blackbird fumbled with this blueprint.
You will not notice the negative parts of Minecraft Legends when you first start playing it. As you keep at it after an hour or two, you will soon realize that the world is just a hollow mimic of the original. I was told the game was made to be catered to kids, but the gameplay feels too overwhelming.

Even though Minecraft Legends isn't a bad game, the fact that it's in direct competition with its much better predecessor makes the title hard to recommend.

Minecraft Legends presented itself as a giant world offering much space to explore its surroundings. We had various environments full of wildlife to look forward to. It was a great adventure that was supposed to leave us in awe and an excellent system for devising new strategies. But everything the game offers in its current state is more of a taste of what it could evolve into. The combat will provide fun for a while, but once you find one strategy that works, you don't need to invent anything else. That's not true of the PvP mode, which will offer some exciting battles thanks to the different players.

Minecraft Legends doesn’t quite live up to the lofty ambitions of the game it is spun off from, as much of its potential has gone unrealized.
Minecraft Legends isn’t a bad game; the issue is that it doesn’t excel at any of the genres that it attempts to tackle. In terms of construction, it doesn’t hold a candle to the possibilities of the original, and to be fair that isn’t quite the aim here – still, it could do a lot more than it currently does; as a tactical warfare game, it’s a simplistic and yet occasionally convoluted take offering slim options to engage in deep and meaningful combat, instead ruling by numbers and basic unit expertise that won’t get your commander juices flowing. Conqueror’s Blade is one of countless examples that perform this art of war in superior ways, balancing complexity with fun in a rewarding way. Too shallow for players looking for a challenge and too complicated for younger players, creativity is mostly absent in this spin-off. Minecraft Legends may retain some of its original blocky charm, but the fun aspect was lost somewhere along the way, being replaced by repetitive gameplay and frustrating unit control woes.
Minecraft Legends is not a game with a very deep strategy aspect. It appeals to a wider audience in terms of age. It is a game where you can spend time with your friends, either competitively or cooperatively, but you are likely to get bored alone.

Nothing in Minecraft Legends is entirely unique, and its most memorable aspects are its commitment to the series’ art direction and its PvP matches. Between the two, there’s a formulaic campaign that feels like a fun social space in co-op but lacking in variety and direction when played solo. It’s Minecraft, but not as you know it - for better and worse.
Minecraft Legends may look and feel like an authentic spinoff, but with fiddly controls, contrived and repetitive gameplay design, in addition lackluster AI, it's only worth delving into for younger audiences and staunch Minecraft fans.
Minecraft Legends is an excellent entry point into the RTS genre for young players or those who have never touched a strategy game in their life. For the others, , the title is a small disappointment with a cruel lack of strategy.
