While I enjoyed exploring Mournstead and appreciate what Lords of the Fallen brings to the soulslike formula, it ultimately fails to maintain consistency throughout.

Lords of the Fallen can take and sweep the house with the 2014 release. It's a game with its own charisma, very rewarding artistically, and with ideas that fit the genre like a glove. I only regret that it didn't debut as polished as the standards demand, but I trust that HEXWORKS will update it over time to become a game that achieves excellence.

The team does a fantastic job of world building, while making a challenging and rewarding game. The game may start out as rather linear, but as you open it up and spend a few dozen hours in the game it really starts to excel at basically everything.

after all this waiting and the beautiful early showing of the game, Lords of The Fallen the hope was on it to provide something unique and successful . Despite the beautiful design of the worlds and the use of some tools, it failed to establish the game in the genre it is based on and provide good bosses, in addition to that are the major technical failure that plagues the game. All of this makes it one of the most frustrating games of the year.

In all though, this is such a comprehensive replica of the Souls formula that a brief glance at the screen will result in most folks thinking that you’re playing a From Software game. Indeed, for the most part, 2023’s Lords of the Fallen is a very well-crafted Soulslike that looks phenomenal, plays really well, and has a deep reverence for the source material it’s inspired by.

While it addresses many aspects lacking during the franchise’s first outing, the overall experience still misses the high-water mark it aims for, with a glut of gameplay systems and wonky mechanics rearing their ugly heads each time a measure of success is achieved elsewhere. It outpaces its predecessor in terms of quality, to be sure, but not enough to make for an emphatic recommendation.

As you can see, Lords of the Fallen won't be one of our Games of the Year in 2023. While the title is still an improvement on what it offered us in 2014, we're not there yet. Yes, Axiom and Umbral are beautiful and make the game intriguing. But we quickly discover all the game's negative points, and they're far too present to make the overall experience enjoyable. The combat can be excellent or mediocre, the level design disappointing and the story uninteresting. Perhaps we'll be treated to a third attempt in the future? As far as I'm concerned, I'll be missing out this time...

For a title with such a troubled development process, to some extent the mere fact that Lords of the Fallen (2023) was released in such a state is in itself a small achievement.

The game design and exploration logic tied to Lord of the Fallen's main mechanics work great, thanks to a game map layout that remains elaborate and intelligent throughout. Unfortunately, the lack of variety of enemies and poor management of their placement, coupled with a number of serious technical inaccuracies in the control system severely ruins the gameplay.

You know at the end of the day, LOTF (2023) has a lot of great aspects, but man these bugs are numerous, significant, and very damaging to the experience. Hexworks is probably going to make this right — I believe they will. If Cyberpunk 2077 can do it, so can these guys and frankly LOTF does not have as far to go to be made right. LOTF could be a great investment of your money and time, but in complete transparency, it’s going to take them some more time to get there. I’d recommend waiting to bite on this one for a few more months until things are really ironed out and tuned. It’s not like we don’t all have a ton of other things to play anyway — but the state of LOTF right now is just too technically unsound to give it a glowing thumbs up. There’s still a great game undernearth all the mess if you can survive the bugginess, but give it a little more time to ripen for now and I think you’ll be glad you did.

Lords of the Fallen comes with some big caveats - it's designed to ambush the player in really snide ways, its boss distribution is erratic, and it really needs a proper map. Despite these annoyances, I’ve been utterly entrenched in a beautiful world, hooked on solid gameplay, and inspired by exquisite art direction. The persistent multiplayer is a treat, while the two-sided world makes for some clever navigation. It might be fundamentally unoriginal, but it heaps of ton of stuff onto that foundation.

There is a LOT to love here with Lords of the Fallen, and I am genuinely optimistic about the legs this game has, and the potential it has to really go far.

Lords of the Fallen could've been a great reset for the title after a rough development process, but the execution of some of its elements leaves much to be desired.

If you want another new Dark Souls clone, just wait til devs patch up most of the problems. In the meantime, pay attention to the Lies of P.

...some will fall in love with its inventive mechanics and rich lore, while others might find themselves tripped up by its shortcomings “Lords of the Fallen” is a game that will undoubtedly find its niche audience, those who can overlook its flaws for the sake of its innovations.

You will find one of the most fascinating, rewarding and in-depth souls like out there. Lords of the Fallen deserves to sit next to some of the genre best, such as NioH 2, Lies of P and so many others. It brings its own flavor to the table, even if it sometimes tastes sour. I’m more than sure that I will be back to it sooner rather than later. Mournstead is calling me, and I already have many planned builds to tweak with.

I remember reviewing Code Vein in 2019. Dark Souls had inspired that game in very wrong ways and in turn it had made me swear off reviewing Soulslikes not made by From Software for the some time. Saying Lords of the Fallen did the same would be unfair but that doesn’t mean I don’t have some harsh words for the developers…
