Pulling its inspirations from across videogames, this radioactive romp is the strongest in the series, and one of the best post-apocalyptic games ever made.Harry Shepherd

Despite these gripes, it’s clear that 4A Games has sacrificed none of Metro’s survivalist spirit. Amid all the ruin, murder, and mutation, there’s a humanity to this game that few other shooters ever reach.

Metro Exodus confidently takes the franchise into 'AAA' territory with a tense, exciting, survival horror game that balances exciting action with methodical stealth and a stunning open world. Just remember: it's not always the dark you should be afraid of.

It is a great game that had to smear itself in a layer of whatever-nothing to convince you that it belonged in a certain genre. But like the octopus pretending to be a rock, Metro Exodus is a brilliant creature in the guise of a worse one. With some time, energy, and emotional investment it springs to life.

In sum, Metro Exodus takes the best elements of 2033 and Last Light and adds a major evolutionary component with open world exploration and crafting.

Metro: Exodus requires patience during the long cut-scenes and way too extensive dialogues, but it's worth it. The new Metro offers unique, superb gameplay full of amazing locations and a magnificent atmosphere. Don't wait for Half-Life 3 – in my opinion, you can get the same amount of fun today!

Metro Exodus feels like a solid simulacrum of someone else trying to make a Fallout game, for all the benefits and drawbacks that entails.

After the confined spaces of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light, Metro Exodus feels far more expansive, but never strays too far from what makes the series unique.

Metro Exodus shows some heart, and it's clear the developers have poured a lot into this third chapter of Artyom's story. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that keep the game from hitting the standard set by its predecessors. Pacing is hamstrung by the ambitious misfire of an 'open-world', while performance issues and glitches mar much of Exodus.

Being perfectly honest, after the last two Metro games, not only is this one refreshing change, one that was needed. The open world, the crafting, and the large assortment of NPCs that you'll encounter during the game. The Metro's closed walls and need for something more gave way to all of this. Sure, we're finally on the outside, yet the hellish world that you've come to know doesn't take a backseat. Instead, we're just introduced to more of it. There's a whole new world to explore and experience, all while this new setting does the game good. Now we just need to know which ending is canon this time around. If this is the future of the series, I can't wait to see what 4A Games does next.

Despite shortcomings like a rather by the numbers level of quality of side missions, poor performance both visually and audibly, Metro Exodus still manages to deliver a compelling experience. Thanks to its meaty crafting and gun customization, a beautiful character-driven story focused more on humans than the fantastical, and a world built around fear, desolation, and tension, Exodus will definitely be one of 2019's most talked about games by the end of the year.

Boasting solid gameplay and one of the most compelling stories I've played in recent times, Metro Exodus' shift to the striking Russian landscape is not only a worthy successor to the previous entries, but one of the best shooters on the PS4 today.

Metro Exodus makes great progress in terms of open-world and battle system. And of course, it offers an outstanding thrilling story just like its prequels.

That said, for the quick and obligatory surface level comparison: it's a dash of Fallout, a sprinkle of BioShock, some Dishonored for flavour and Thief to darken the edges. Yet still, all Metro Exodus.

A voice to go with Artyom’s soul would have been nice, as well as some AI tweaking, but the thoughtful additions and improvements from previous Metro games gives Exodus a fresh experience for anyone ready for a wild train ride.
