We can play in Spain with the subtitles in our language and for the first time we can do it on the platform of our choice. An essential title for lovers of JRPGs that did not play at the time, and the best possible version for those who did.

In video games, twenty years are an eternity an even ten years ago sounds remote. One of the best things that can be said about Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, more than years old now, is that it’s surprisingly in good shape even now.

No, this isn't another Final Fantasy nor a new episode of Kingdom Hearts. Although we are not talking about some masterpiece, Tales of Vesperia is still a great japanese RPG, which gets more enjoyable the more you play. At the very end, you'll feel a great feeling that you've just experienced an unique adventure.

Tales of Vesperia still holds up as a game that is absolutely charming and enjoyable to play, with a multi-faceted cast of characters and a story of intrigue. It’s a JRPG that deserves your attention, even despite its tangible flaws.

The cast is colorful and fun, battles are fun, and the story will keep players engaged as long as they don’t mind the occasional back-tracking.

All in all, I had a lot of fun playing Tales of Vesperia. So far I’ve spent over 75 hours on it and I can say that this definitive edition was highly worth pre-ordering. I’d recommend the game to most JRPG fans because, despite being a 10 year old game, I do believe it holds up well today and graphically, it isn’t half bad either. Although, because of the half-assed localization, the lack of story depth at times and the clunkier gameplay, I can’t give this game as high of a rating as I would like to. If you can look past the issues I’ve mentioned, or if it one day gets some kind of localization fix patched in, then go for it. If not, this might be a game you’re either better off passing up, or buying on sale (for reference, the MSRP at launch was $49.99).

Boasting the best script, best overworld, and best pacing the series has ever seen, Tales of Vesperia stands out as the single strongest entry in the franchise. Though later entries do feature stronger casts and gameplay mechanics, this is not lacking in either department. The members of Brave Vesperia all share an excellent amount of chemistry with one another, and the combat, while comparatively simple, actually thrives in how easy to pick up but difficult to master it can be. While not every addition exclusive to the Definitive Edition exactly benefits the narrative - a shame considering how thematically cohesive and airtight the overall story is - each gameplay addition is ultimately for the better, from the two new party members all the way to the new dungeons. Tales of Vesperia is a high point not only for its franchise, but for its genre.

From the perspective of a new fan, who wants to approach the series, this is undoubtedly an excellent starting point to really appreciate the Tales of and understand the caliber of the development team behind these famous JRPGs. In addition to having an outstanding cast and a compelling story, the gameplay is super fun, rich and solid at the right point, putting itself in a middle point between tradition and modern conceptions that we can observe in the current generation.

While Bandai Namco has not released a real 8th generation title in the Tales series yet, the new ported version of Tales of Vesperia feels like a solid JRPG that can easily be compared with current 8th generation titles. If you are a fan of JRPGs and for some reason had no chance to grab it back in 2008, now is the time for you to experience one of the best entries in the Tales series and one of the best JRPGs ever.
