Star Renegades has some great ideas; the characters are solid, likeable and believable, and the world is intriguing, but it may be too punishing for some.

Simply put, Star Renegades is an indie masterpiece. The depth of its gameplay and tactics make it one of the most creative and rewarding turn based experiences available today. Couple that with captivating visuals and an endearing story and cast of characters make this one that you cannot miss. As one of our most anticipated indie releases from the last two years, Star Renegades was more than worth the wait.

Star Renegades is a perfect hybrid of a tactical RPG and roguelite battling system, with easy to comprehend mechanics. As you level so does the enemy, making the threat ever increasing and prominent throughout the whole playthrough. The unique maps with boundless variations sprawling over three varying planets will keep you coming back for more. The breathtaking visuals are more than enough reason to play this game and fight against the Imperium!

Star Renegades offers players a fresh and unique experience that sadly loses its appeal after its punishing roguelike systems have you experience the same elements over and over. Even through the repetitive enemies that you face along the way, there’s no denying that the characters and environments that make up this world make it a must-play game within the genre. Still, the best parts are reserved for those who are seeking a genuinely challenging roguelite RPG sci-fi adventure, which may leave others lost in space.

A great looking '2DX' pixel art roguelike, though it feels a little thin.

These factors add up to a game that starts strong, but that can quickly become a frustrating and repetitious experience. I allow for the possibility that Massive Damage's target demographic for Star Renegades are players who will have an easier time progressing through the game and thus won't spend as much time replaying the same sequences. But it is a game with repetition built into its DNA. Therefore, it feels fair to criticize the game when that repetition begins to feel like a chore. Despite all of that, the game's depth is impressive. It's remarkable how every system, from character selection to movement on the map to the campfire conversations are all interlinked and can make a significant difference in your success or failure. If the game's respawn system were a bit more forgiving, or the playthroughs more varied, this could be an absolute success. As it is, hardcore grinders are the most likely to appreciate this cyclical adventure.

Star Renegades offers an interesting and visually beautiful RPG and roguelike experience. The turn-based battle is its best feature, due to the presence of the remarkable nuanced timeline manipulation system. In addition, the wide variety of heroes, techniques and equipment offers many options when assembling tactics - mastering resources is essential, as the difficulty is accentuated. As a roguelike, the game falls short with exploration with few events and limited structure, which brings a sense of repetition. Still, it is worth playing Star Renegades to experience its excellent combat.

Gorgeous pixel art graphics and one of the best turn-based combat systems of recent years can't quite make up for an obnoxious script and frustrating role-playing elements.

Star Renegades is a fun, challenging Rogue-lite RPG. Its creative use of familiar game mechanics is a bit of a double-edged (laser)sword. On the one hand, once you get the rhythm of gameplay and world navigation it's a great gameplay experience. However getting to that point can be a bit of a slog, especially for gamers who are dipping their toes in the genre. Overall, though, Massive Damage has created a game that sets itself apart enough with its unique gameplay and premise, that it's worth taking a look at.

Star Renegades had me enamored from the opening cutscene and sunk its claws deep with its tactically-sound combat, incredible aesthetic, pulse-pounding soundtrack, great story elements, and superb writing. I wish that its meta progression elements were more significant and that it didn't insist on being yet another rogue-lite, but I still felt compelled - even after some really sour defeats - to come back and fight the good fight against the Imperium.

Star Renegades is a beautiful looking futuristic game with fun memorable characters and deep tactical gameplay to match. Certainly not an easy game. The Imperium is a hard enemy to stand up to. But with every failed attempt comes new lessons in the hopes of finally entering that dimension where you succeed. Star Renegades is a game I won’t be putting down anytime soon and look forward to its future updates.

I was more indifferent than anything about Raw Fury’s previous release, West of Dead, but I can without a doubt say that I’m anything but that about Star Renegades. Its solution for making a roguelite more playable and adding depth to the inherent repetition is one I’ve enjoyed most up till now. While I haven’t quite saved the universe yet, I know I’ll get there if I keep trying.

Star Renegades is the second game from Massive Damage, Inc. After that drinkable game they take another step in their development as a company and bring us a tactical role-playing game with touches of roguelite that drinks artistically and in development from the classics, but acquires its Your own identity and a satisfying combat system of your own once you master it.
