PES 2018's gameplay feels incredibly random when playing against the AI, and it's incredibly frustrating to have to deal with.

It's a solid jumping-on point if you're new to the series, but seasoned veterans may find too few improvements to justify the price.

Unfortunately, a small number of licenses prevent the game from becoming truly perfect, but Pro Evolution Soccer is primarily loved and appreciated for its deep gameplay. And this aspect in PES 2018 is great.

On the pitch, PES 2018 is almost perfect. But as always, the lack of licenses is a bit of a let down. If you can look past that, it is a must-buy.

Some notable adjustments make PES 2018 a lovely football game that feels comfortable to play and realistic from the very first match. New animations, better physics and responsiveness are, with the fact that it is quite challenging, what makes it a fun simulation that has to be considered for this season.

A great new entry for this legendary soccer series.

PES 2018 it's the confirmation that the franchise of Konami is evolving into the total football, with a gameplay that captures amazingly the details of this sport, and where the stars, the players, are astonishing real with a photorealistic style. It's a shame the lack of licences, but if you really care about soccer, PES 2018 should be your bet this season

Pro Evolution Soccer 18 is another viable competitor to EA's FIFA dominance, though the same familiar shortcomings continue to plague the franchise.

While the same issues of bland presentation, a lack of in-game atmosphere, and licensing inconsistencies return once again in PES 2018, if you're looking for a football game that plays close to perfectly, offering you the control to be precise with every touch of the ball, Konami's game is comfortably the best option around.

While the list of off-field changes is more than limited, PES 2018 improves upon the in-match action of last year's title enough to get by and remain at the top of the footballing table.

You definitely can't go wrong buying Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, as it plays as good as ever, but those who bought last year's game might want to wait until next year's installment if they're waiting for that next evolution. That's not to say that there aren't improvements, as the subtle tweaks and additions do add up to a better game, but these are more quality of life fixes rather than changes that'll sweep the player off their feet. Ultimately, PES 2018 is yet another great football game from Konami, but that might not be enough when they're trailing a behemoth.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is one of the most solid (yet least flashy) sports sims on the market. Every year, PES seems to further carve out its own identity and plant a flag for players who want a deeper, less forgiving, and yet somehow more familiar soccer-playing experience. Everything in PES 2018 is earned, and while some of it still could use some polish, it continues to take steps forward. How long it can withstand the tidal wave of FIFA's recent successes and licensing dominance, however, remains to be seen.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is the perfect football game on the pitch, but flounders off the pitch. It offers a lot of value to the franchise agnostic but might not be compelling enough to warrant the annual purchase.

On the pitch Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is the undisputed football king, but around that there is too much stagnation.

On the pitch, PES 2018 still delivers big with a footie game that remains the best around. Unfortunately a lack of anything truly innovative holds it back somewhat, as does the continuing shortage of licenses. Next year, PES needs to go big or go home.

PES 2018 is an exceptionally successful simulation of the football match. Better physics of the ball, the better physics of the players and slowing down the match came out to be a good idea. Unfortunately, it's Konami - the company had to break something.

Currently, I'm unconvinced by Pro Evolution Soccer 2018. It has all the trademarks of what a great footballing game should be, but sloppy presentation, jerky in-game transitions, poor commentary and a lack of exciting multiplayer modes leave this one still trailing FIFA's dust.

The new edition of PES does not offer a revolution. But you need to remember that Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 doesn’t need one – it’s a great sporting game that just got a little better. Ball control improvement and additions in Master League are welcome, but the small number of licenses is not (as usual). But all in all it’s still a very good game.

PES 2018 is not without its flaws, many of which will both frustrate and disappoint you, but its excellent on-pitch gameplay helps it overcome most of those hurdles and come out the other side an extremely enjoyable football sim.
