There’s an interesting premise at the heart of What Remains of Edith Finch – explore a house and get to know a bunch of characters by invading their personal space and seeing how they died. And the short stories themselves can be interesting, particularly the shifts and changes they bring to the otherwise standard first-person gameplay. But there’s very little attempt made outside of these short stories to actually connect the player with its many subjects. Too often I felt like I was simply going through the motions.

A unique experience filled with imaginative and visually rich stories that will make you think but won't necessarily go back to once it's over.

At its best, the game is a perfect marriage between the telling of a story and one's first-hand engagement with it.

What Remains of Edith Finch masterfully shows that narrative-driven games can tell stories in creative ways without sacrificing gameplay. Ultimately, though, the experience is let down by the story itself, which doesn't do much of anything interesting with its characters or subject matter.

As a spooky, logical evolution of the Gone Homes and Firewatches of the world, with an impressive short-story style to boot, What Remains of Edith Finch is ultimately worth your time if its premise grabs you.

Given its wide scope, it's understandable that it's also a game that succeeds more in concept than execution. Like the subjects of the multi-generational novels whose tradition it embraces, Edith Finch's individual successes and failures are less important than its overall effect. It's a story made of stories, and the results of its breadth seem more important than the fine details.

The experience is short, but ultimately well constructed. The ending has a very M. Night Shyamalan feel to it – you'll get some closure, but you'll also want more! Yes, What Remains of Edith Finch is essentially a walking simulator – but with a unique story, some very interesting sequences and some fun "game" moments, it's the best one I personally have had the pleasure of playing.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a good game, but it fails to arrive at a satisfying conclusion, or build on its gameplay and narrative themes in any satisfying way. Thus, it never elevates itself to be something more than a series of interesting distractions, tied to a mystery that never resolves itself.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a typical walking simulator, which in terms of mechanics, does not differ much from such representatives of the genre as Gone Home or even Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

The sepulchral What Remains of Edith Finch is a provocative, if frustratingly brief, rumination on life and death that effortlessly burrows its way under the skin.

All in all, What Remains of Edith Finch is a solid experience. You're going to play through it once, which makes the $20 price tag a little difficult to swallow, but it's a well-made and interesting experience that does an excellent job in evoking emotions. The plot is slightly inconsistent, but it more than makes up for it with style. It's absolutely worth the time it takes to play through, and even if every beat doesn't hit, enough of them do to be worth your time. It won't change your mind if you dislike the "walking simulator" genre, but if you're a fan, then Edith Finch is a great experience.

This is about how you born, how you live and how you die. A game about life and death. A game that makes you think about your life. About “What will remain of me?!” No puzzles, No challenges. You are free to follow one of the saddest stories you’ve ever heard. A big house is yours to explore and find the stories of the people who lived there one day. Every member of the family has a story and Giant Sparrow really knows how these stories should be told.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a short but bittersweet adventure of a family struggling to live with its past. It's not exactly bombastic but it'll likely tug a heart string here or two.

For those who can't stand the "walking simulator" genre, Edith Finch likely won't change your mind. But Edith Finch does incredibly interesting things for fans of these kinds of experiences. Telling stories from different perspectives throughout time allows it experiment with different types of gameplay in different settings. At two hours it may be a bit short, but ultimately I was satisfied with its conclusion.

What Remains of Edith Finch is an example of an inventive and engaging experience that both aligns with the traditional definition of what a 'game' can be, and yet also seeks to challenge it. The story can be cliché at times, and sometimes the symbolism lacks subtlety, but what's offered here is a perfect blend of bittersweet themes and motifs. It's linear, but it's enjoyable and intriguing enough to demand your attention for its perfect run time.

A compelling story well told, and although it's still not very interactive the variety and artfulness of the presentation feels like something only a video game could do.
