Not perfect, but one of the most absorbing, challenging and fun games of the year so far, which makes the fact it was developed by just one person all the more astounding.
A wonderful throwback to a bygone era, Axiom Verge's focus on classic gameplay provides a welcome change of pace, even if it could've benefitted from a hint of modern design.
Axiom Verge is a brilliant homage to the 'metroidvania' origins back in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Whilst the choice to be so uncompromising in its retro style might not suit everyone, the gameplay in the title remains compelling and manages to maintain that fine balance in the level of difficulty for being challenging for all players without becoming frustrating.

Axiom Verge uses Metroid's building blocks to create a fantastic adventure that can stretch for hours if you want it to … though maybe not always in a good way. It is a game molded around one gamer's deep respect and passion for video games of the past. Playing through Axiom Verge allows you to embrace that wave of nostalgia and make it your own. It never shies away from features of its predecessors, but carves out its own unique place in the Metroidvania genre.
The story kept me interested to a great extent and I am really curious to see what will happen in the sequel. While some players who are familiar with Metroidvania games will enjoy Axiom Verge, those who are not as familiar with the genre will have a difficult time enjoying the game.
Axiom Verge has come to the Nintendo Switch, and while the game has been out on several platforms over the last few years, it holds up just as well now as it did when it released then. It's retro sensibilities have allowed it to age flawlessly, making it just as compelling to play now as it was upon initial release. If for some reason you have not had a chance to play this Metroid-style game yet, and you have a Switch, you really should pick it up if you are a fan of action / adventure games.
Axiom Verge picks up the Metroid mantle and takes it in an entirely new direction while still retaining the best aspects of the classic from Nintendo. It's a wonderful adventure full of astonishing sights and sublime sounds, all created by a one man developer, Tom Happ. I'm very much looking forward to discovering his next project...if it's half as good as Axiom Verge, we are all in for a treat!
Axiom Verge is just the kind of retro-fitted kick in the pants that PlayStation 4 owners needed. While the story and map could've used a little ironing over, the game delivers excitement aplenty, especially with some of the bigger bosses. The diversity of weapons and tools you'll run across will keep you busy as well. Kudos to Tom Happ (with some help from Dan Adelman) for bringing us back some retro goodness for our new system. Now, sequel please. (Or at the very least, that PS Vita port we were promised…)
If you are looking for something to dip in and out of during the busy Fall period, then look no further.
Old school merely in looks, Axiom Verge is the definition of a great action and explorations game. The Metroidvania genre has rarely been done this well and this adventure deserves to be held up there among the greats like Symphony of the Night and the original Metroid.
A massive, challenging retro-flavoured shooter that takes the Metroid formula and runs with it. Old school, but with a modern edge.
Axiom Verge is a great game and an even greater accomplishment by a very talented developer. While some of the world design and backtracking issues caused some frustrations, I loved my time in this bio-mechanical world.
