Given that it’s a remastering, it probably won’t take too long for a cost reduction, and closer to $20 feels much more reasonable given what’s presented here.

Strictly as a videogame, Dark Souls Remastered is the fantastic original, but with a bunch of welcome updates. Purely as a remaster, however, it's disappointing, to say the least. This had the chance to offer the best 'Souls' title (Bloodborne excluded), while also adding improvements from newer instalments - instead, it's just a patch/visual upgrade, and a low effort one at that. Plus, the PC version is currently the buggiest one.

Overall, I think QLOC dropped the ball here. I love Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 1 will always be my favorite of the all the games in the series, but there was simply no love put into this remaster. However, if you've never played the game, or if you've only ever played the console versions, then I would highly recommend picking up Dark Souls Remastered Edition, as it fixes a lot of issues that were present and unfix-able in the original console version of the game and still plays just as well now as it did in the past. But if you own the original Dark Souls 1 for PC, and you have no desire to PvP, don't even bother buying the remaster. Even with the $20 discount, it's not remotely worth the price tag when you consider you already get all these improvements (even if slightly buggy) for free.

Dark Souls Remastered is a nice, shiny new edition of a game that I have never enjoyed. While I respect the game's genre-creating precision gameplay and acknowledge it's place in gaming history, I just don't like this game, and can't recommend it to new players. That said, it plays fine, and looks better than it ever has. Dark Souls fans already know who they are, and will enjoy this new edition immensely.

While the game is in essence still amazing, there are still some problems from the original version to be found. The remaster is great for newcomers to the series but not enough to buy a second time

If there was more attention given towards improving what was already a great game, Dark Souls Remastered could have been perfect. Instead, it falls somewhere in this half-hearted limbo. Finally, it has a very stable and high frame-rate, but the collision and hit-detection is still unfairly off. This is one of the defining classics of the seventh generation consoles. It spawned its own sub-genre of action RPGs and gave From Software an unfathomable amount of credibility. It deserves better than this. If Scholar of the First Sin gets extra polish and refinement, it is tragic that the first entry in the trilogy does not get the same effort. When the inevitable day comes when Demon's Souls gets a remake or remaster, hopefully it gets more care than Dark Souls.

$40 is a steep price to pay for Dark Souls Remastered on consoles, especially since it doesn't benefit from the new licks of paint. The title that really needs remastering - Demon's Souls - remains curiously in the wild.

Dark Souls Remastered finally brings the series to a Nintendo console with a very competent and solid port. It's ported from the older generation consoles, but it still looks and plays pretty well. There are a few minor control issues, but it's mainly due to not getting dedicated button mapping for the Nintendo platform. If you're a fan of the series or a newcomer, the game is still worth a look.

If you played the original game at the time of release and now you're missing it, Dark Souls Remastered is like reliving that memories with a 4K resolution. Otherwise, the remastered version is nothing different which would make you love it if you hate the original one.

While it isn't without some notable and completely unnecessary problems, the Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered is still a great way to experience one of the best games ever released. The ability to play the game wherever and whenever is wonderful, and it's nice to have this improvement on the original PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 release to contrast the more drastic overhaul the other platforms received.

Dark Souls is an amazing and important game, but the remaster does little to spice things up, providing little reason to really go back to Lordran. Blighttown runs at 60fps though, so that might be reason enough for some.

An excellent game that may not be beautiful, but it's as fun as hard to beat as it was 7 years ago. If you didn't played on 2011 you have to this time, specially if you love the soulslike games.

These issues do lower the score a bit and affect my overall enjoyment of the game. That being said, the portability factor is a huge one. Is this the definitive version of Dark Souls? No, I would say that belongs to Dark Souls Remastered on PC (or maybe current gen consoles). But if you just want to go through the game for the 20th time and you want to do so on the go, this is a really quality release. I can’t recommend it for PVP due to the lag, and you would generally not want to do that on the go with WiFi anyways. So this is a great release, as long as you know what you are getting. It certainly justifies the full $59.99 price, but I don’t think that I can recommend paying for the Nintendo Online service just to PVP in this game. What I can recommend is taking this game on long trips, like I did a couple weeks ago, and just soaking in that glorious Soulsborne horror while you are sitting in bed.

Overall, Dark Souls was a great game when it originally released in 2011. Today, Dark Souls Remastered is still a great game. Being able to play a game like this on the go is a marvel in itself.

Dark Souls Remastered is now the definitive way to experience the game, especially on console. It contains all the DLC and online functionality from the original title, with some added quality of life improvements. The game has never looked cleaner and crisper than it does now. You can finally put away your PS3 and Xbox 360, if the original Dark Souls was your only tether to the consoles. Now you can die once again over and over, but in a smooth 60fps and 1080p.

Despite its shortcomings, Dark Souls Remastered is a welcome release that will hopefully breathe new life into the community and multiplayer activity with both new and old players. It may also be the last "souls game" release for quite some time, given From Software's latest endeavours.

The embers of Dark Souls might not burn as bright seven years later, but Dark Souls: Remastered proves this is still one of the best RPGs of the modern era.

Dark Souls Remastered has aged well, despite the progress of its successors. Newcomers might fight it abrasive, but it is still worth a pickup for old fans and new alike. Here's to a release of Demon's Souls Remastered.
