Legend of Legacy was fun and intriguing on the 3DS, but on the Switch it feels like a no-brainer. The frame rate issues and visual imperfections are gone, making the art and character designs stand out even more. The music, composed by Masashi Hamauzu for all you Final Fantasy XIII degenerates out there, is a home run. If this is the kind of game you can gel with, a hardcore dungeon-crawler with strange rules and light storytelling, don’t miss it. If some of these ideas sound neat, but other parts are scary, try out Alliance Alive instead. This team had something special going for sure, and it brings me hope for these kinds of passion projects to see them reappear on different platforms.

The Legend of Legacy HD is the high-definition translation of the Nintendo 3DS video game of the same name. It is a Japanese role-playing game clearly aimed at the audience of enthusiasts looking for inscrutable game mechanics, but it hardly manages to make itself attractive in any way to the general public.

Ultimately, the HD remastering of The Legend of Legacy shows the same structural and content problems that plagued the original.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is a decent, though unspectacular, dungeon crawler that does a good job of defying some traditional RPG tropes. Mechanics like the elemental system and the randomized character progression help this stand out from the pack, while its simple dungeon-crawling format carries the basic, but satisfying gameplay for dozens of hours. Still, it doesn't take very long for this one to feel like it's overstaying its welcome, and more could've been done to sand its rougher edges. Legend of Legacy may not be the best example of this genre, but it's still an enjoyable release for the dungeon-crawling cognoscenti.

I'm not sure what to feel about The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered. I don't really mind the game's minimalist approach to narrative, but the dungeon design, repetitive battles, and difficulty walls I hit made it hard to press on.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered for Switch does a decent job of modernizing the visuals of the 2015 3DS game, but the important issues from the original still remain. Its lack of story and the difficulty spikes with its unique combat system make it hard to recommend to anyone other than the most fervent of JRPG fans.

Played in short bursts, Legend of Legacy is a stunning-looking JRPG for the genre’s nostalgic. The clean, functional turn-based combat, combined with straightforward objectives and smooth flow through the adventure make this one best played in short bursts so the lack of narrative can’t drag on the all the other positives in the experience. Play it on those terms, however, and its charms will never fade.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is a barebones port of a flawed JRPG, now with a hefty £44.99 price tag. When you can get the various SaGa ports and remakes for far less, I can’t even recommend this game for fans of more unique RPGs.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is a solid port of an interesting but flawed game. If you want to explore some dungeon-like areas, rock some SaGa-like combat, and listen to some beautiful music, then it's worth journeying through Avalon. Otherwise, this remains a game I think is neat but wouldn't necessarily emphatically recommend to most aside from the specific group I just described.

Although it holds up well aesthetically, The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is an underwhelming grind fest with not enough interesting narrative to keep players engaged.

Although inspired by important classics of the genre and with good ideas, The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered fails to deliver an experience that hooks the player enough to keep them interested in completing a journey. Let alone seven – which ends up putting it in the background in a scenario in which high-level experiences are increasingly abundant.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered offers a promising RPG formula that's unfortunately weighed down by frequent frustrations and unnecessary tedium. Thankfully, The Alliance Alive was born from this which is a vastly superior experience. ⚔️

While the nostalgia may appeal to some fans of the original release, newcomers are likely to find little to redeem this lackluster remaster.

The Legend of Legacy has ideas that I fully support, but the execution has it firmly sitting in the mildly above average category. The major deterrent is the absence of a storyline. It’s the definition of loose, and no amount of exercise will help it tighten.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered has some neat ideas, but the repetitive gameplay loop and lack of engaging storytelling holds it back. It’s not that I’d say that anything in the game is bad at all, but rather that the systems it has didn’t offer enough to keep me invested in the meaty adventure. Whilst I enjoyed toying about with the formation system, loved the visuals, and found the gameplay loop engaging early on, there are a few too many flaws for it to stand out as an essential release of the genre.

In the end, The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered doesn't make much of an effort to renovate the original work. What we have here is an RPG that can be interesting only for the most passionate about the genre who are looking for a loose experience focused on combat and grinding.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered succeeds in its mission to revive a cult classic stuck on the Nintendo 3DS in high definition and modern platforms. Though the remaster work has been hardly bold and does nothing concrete to mitigate the issues from the original work, the lack of ambition isn't enough to change the fact that this experimental JRPG is worth checking out for the genre's enthusiasts. So long as expectations are properly adjusted.

I’ve seen what the game looks like on the 3DS and blowing that up to fit the bigger Switch screen or a TV probably wouldn’t look that good without some tweaking. Fortunately FuRyu did a great job with making sure that the game looked as good as it could on the Switch.

The Legend of Legacy HD Remastered is what it is, definitely, and nothing about its remaster changed what the game was like on release. With its unspoken story and non-traditional levelling system, this is not going to be a game for everyone. But its refreshed accessibility and the fact that there are plenty of in-depth guides out there with oodles of still relevant information makes this an interesting way to find out if you’d enjoy similar, harder games like SaGa Frontier. Or if you’d enjoy Alliance Alive, which was also remastered several years ago for the Nintendo Switch. This is where I admit I’m an old-school gamer, and this is my kind of thing. I grew up on obstinate, mapless, pain-in-the-rear dungeon crawlers, and this pretty, cosy (and low on fan service) homage to the genre is just the right kind of game for me to laze on the couch and play. It’s asking for patience from its players and a little investment to figure out how to make your party strong enough to wear down bosses. It requests your imagination to fill in the gaps of its story, giving you the freedom to think pretty much whatever you want of your journey through this ruined isle. If you’re like me, this is a special treat, a game that’s both different than anything else currently on the Switch and familiar to those of us who grew up with graph paper and clue books you had to mail away for. That’s why I’m rating this game so highly, as I’m the exact audience this game is seeking. Its quirks may not be for you, but if you’re willing to give it a try, whether on Switch or on Steam, both of which I prefer for this style of game, it’s doing its best to help you out. And it’s looking good doing it.
