I highly recommend this game for casual players and Nintendo fans alike. It's a title that shouldn't be brushed over this holiday season. My only real qualm here is that it feels more like a $30 game than a $40 one, so for those who are on the fence you may want to wait for a price drop.

A plentiful array of excellent puzzle-platforming morsels given vitality by Nintendo's renowned knack for superb animation and design. Perfect for youngsters with just enough for grown-ups to enjoy as well, but it's marred by a lack of depth.

The (perhaps foolishly) brave fungal explorer makes a welcome return in a full-fledged game inspired by his six bite-sized adventures in Super Mario 3D World. While Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker certainly succeeds brilliantly in most of its puzzle-platforming endeavors, it does feel slightly short in the end, and a fussy camera can sabotage sequences that require quick actions and quick decisions. It's clear the concept has a ton of potential even after this, though, so let's hope this isn't a one-off adventure for our diminutive mushroom hero.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on the 3DS may not be the most anticipated game of all time but this is a sharp and efficient conversion of the game that has already been released for the Wii U and Switch and one which is in no way dwarfed by its more technical advanced counterparts.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker highlights one of the best secondary characters in the Super Mario universe, and gives him a stellar adventure. Fans of the Wii U version should pick it up for the portable experience and extra levels while those who didn't play the game in 2014 will find a lot to love. It's another fantastic addition to the continually growing Switch library, and I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with Captain Toad in the future. I had a blast with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Hopefully, this is not the last time we see the titular hero. He can easily go on more adventures, and I'd love to be along for every single one of them.

The Switch delivers Captain Toad in a higher-resolution format, and with better gyroscopic controls.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is the same compelling puzzle adventure that it was on the Wii U, but now on a system that feels far more suited to its bite-sized levels and rapid pace. Its strange control quirks in docked mode make it a less alluring prospect at home, but if you're looking to kill some time anywhere else you'd struggle to find something this good to scratch that itch.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a faithful port of the Wii U puzzle game — one that makes no compromises for the entirely handheld experience. Despite some missed opportunities that Nintendo could have latched onto, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a game that shouldn't be missed for anyone looking for a relaxed mental challenge.

It's been four years since the original release of Captain Toad, and yet, the game still feels as wonderfully unique as it did then. There's nothing else quite like it, and the Switch version looks and plays wonderfully. The overall experience is a short one, but there's plenty of replayability, and it's an experience that any Switch owner should jump on.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a hidden gem from the Wii U era that's been given a new lease of life on the Nintendo Switch, and rightly so. New levels and fresh multiplayer are welcome inclusions but it's a bit of a shame that we've lost four levels as a result – and for no apparent reason. Still, all being said, this is a wonderful and gorgeous puzzler fit for all ages, and one which you should definitely experience if you're yet to.

If you own a Switch then there's no real decision to be made here: Captain Toad is still far and away better on Nintendo's latest system. That's not to say the 3DS version is a write-off, though, because that's far from the case. As seemingly one of the final few big-name releases for the system, Captain Toad pushes it to its limits to produce easily one of the best-looking 3DS games ever made. The 3DS may be preparing for retirement, but games like this are ensuring it's going out in a blaze of glory.

Just like Captain Toad, if you can't jump, you'd better use your brain. This down-to-earth approach transforms the environments into puzzles that require to look harder - and dig deeper - than expected in order to find all of their design treasures. And despite a lack of additional content, such wonders get even shinier on Switch.

The charm of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker resides in the unique variety of levels built for the game, as well as the competent, yet simplistic gameplay design it delivers. Add a strong replay value to the mix and you have one of the best surprises to hit the Wii U this holiday season.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is much closer to a port than an enhanced version like we’ve seen with other Wii U titles. However, those who haven’t played it are better off getting one of the new releases, since those also offer portability. Since the levels are short, it is the perfect title to pick up and play. Despite the flaws, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker still might be one of the best puzzle-action game for Switch.
