Dark souls is not only a game, but a revolution, a turning point and a new definition for RPG genre and maybe the entire gaming. And for this reason, everybody should experience this masterpiece. If you are going to be stuck in a room for the rest of your life with only one game, make sure that game is Dark Souls.

Strictly as a videogame, Dark Souls Remastered is the fantastic original, but with a bunch of welcome updates. Purely as a remaster, however, it's disappointing, to say the least. This had the chance to offer the best 'Souls' title (Bloodborne excluded), while also adding improvements from newer instalments - instead, it's just a patch/visual upgrade, and a low effort one at that. Plus, the PC version is currently the buggiest one.

Dark Souls Remastered is exactly how good ol’ Dark Souls is, but now all decked out in all its enhanced visual glory. It’s the perfect welcome for old fans, and the best way to experience the unforgiving world of Lordran for newer players. Oh, and you’ll still die.

If you've grown a sudden fondness for the Souls series thanks to recent games and have yet to play Dark Souls, you are severely missing out. Dark Souls: Remastered will test the player in every respect, just like it did when it was first released. This is a genuine classic that deserves to be revisited every few years. If a player new to the series were to ask me whether they should play this first, I would say no - leave the best for last.

From Software and Miyazaki’s triumph with technical upgrades, dedicated servers and the DLC included. There is nothing better.

Dark Souls Remastered is a nice, shiny new edition of a game that I have never enjoyed. While I respect the game's genre-creating precision gameplay and acknowledge it's place in gaming history, I just don't like this game, and can't recommend it to new players. That said, it plays fine, and looks better than it ever has. Dark Souls fans already know who they are, and will enjoy this new edition immensely.

Dark Souls Remastered shows that just as the extra visual definition giveth, it also taketh away.

The embers of Dark Souls might not burn as bright seven years later, but Dark Souls: Remastered proves this is still one of the best RPGs of the modern era.

Even though the PvP is not pleasant, the Dark Souls campaign is still sublime. It's worth playing again to try new builds and face challenges in other ways, but the difference that sets the remaster experience is playing at 60 frames per second. The greater precision on the controls and the perfect fluidity add a lot to a product that was already excellent, even with the drawbacks of the original version.

Dark Souls Remastered has aged well, despite the progress of its successors. Newcomers might fight it abrasive, but it is still worth a pickup for old fans and new alike. Here's to a release of Demon's Souls Remastered.

Given that it’s a remastering, it probably won’t take too long for a cost reduction, and closer to $20 feels much more reasonable given what’s presented here.

Subtle changes, such as 60fps support on consoles and a better PC version, makes Dark Souls Remastered the definitive version of a classic. Navigating on twisty hallways and cheating death at every step is as fresh as it was back in 2011.

$40 is a steep price to pay for Dark Souls Remastered on consoles, especially since it doesn't benefit from the new licks of paint. The title that really needs remastering - Demon's Souls - remains curiously in the wild.

Dark Souls Remastered remains a truly wonderful example of modern game design. It’s great for people like me who missed it the first time around and for fans, it’s another chance to Praise the Sun.

Dark Souls is an amazing and important game, but the remaster does little to spice things up, providing little reason to really go back to Lordran. Blighttown runs at 60fps though, so that might be reason enough for some.

There’s never been a better time to jump in and play the original Dark Souls. Whether you’ve played it before and want to re-explore the expertly crafted world of Lordran or experience it for the first time. It’s hard to improve on something that was already so praised but with some visual, performance and quality of life improvements the team at QLOC that handled the remaster have managed to do so while still remaining faithful to what made the game great in the first place. While some of the in game assets are beginning to show their age and there isn’t anything new in the game content-wise for those that have already played through the game (possibly numerous times) it seems the true goal for this release was to make it accessible to those with current generation consoles and improve the performance. And that they’ve well and truly nailed.

If you played the original game at the time of release and now you're missing it, Dark Souls Remastered is like reliving that memories with a 4K resolution. Otherwise, the remastered version is nothing different which would make you love it if you hate the original one.

The controls, the level design, and the lore all feel like precise expressions of the developers' complete vision. Yet I must attach that age-old caveat: this game will remorselessly kick your ass, leaving you hardly a heartbeat before the boot comes whistling your way again.
