Frostpunk Reviews

Few games are as unremittingly grim as Frostpunk. In this world of snow and sacrifice, success comes rarely, and hope is but a fleeting memory. Failure is almost assured, and the lessons learned in that process can only be applied to a certain degree. Additionally, some elements intended to be challenging can be exasperating. Nevertheless, these gripes are relatively minor and do little to detract from the engrossing atmosphere. Although the title is unlikely to be remembered as a benchmark or future model for the city builder genre, it stands out from the pack by daring to carve out a wholly unique niche and refusing to pander to the mass-market mentality.

Frostpunk creates a great concept for a city building game. Unfortunately it lacks of long term motivation and variety and therefore spoils way too fast. The potential is there though and with enough additions to the core it can become an amazing game.

It pushes back hard against the sort of easy dominance over people so common to city-building games.

Frostpunk is a solid entry into the city-builder genre with a unique survival twist, and one that's bound to appeal to those who have enjoyed similar games. Still, it lacks the personality and depth to win over anyone who doesn't already love micromanaging workforces and watching numbers go up.

Frostpunk isn't for everyone, but if you're into hardcore strategy games, there's no reason you won't love the console version as well. The novel setting coupled with the interesting game mechanics will keep you entertained for quite a while.

The three additions collected together to the poop are a solid expansion of the Frostpunk universe. Only the price for each of them can stop the desire to buy, but new players in the topic is offered a complete edition of the game easier to swallow for the wallet.

While the selling point is focused on hard choices, the unrelenting grimness of the setting and need for survival makes them more obvious than difficult. Luckily all the other components (city builder, presentation, etc.) are quite good and the game is enjoyable even if it doesn't quite hit the feels as it intends.

Atmospherically, Frostpunk is very good at making you feel the cold and the desperation that comes along with it. But since you don't really get to create emotional ties with the people you manage, you don't feel the emotional weights of the choices you make either.

It may seem like there is no end in sight, no happy ending for those who survive, but with its fantastic presentation and no-nonsense attitude, Frostpunk is an exemplary game to learn from and with so many paths to go down, the replay value is through the roof, especially for gamers who happen to be a glutton for punishment.

The slower pacing and somewhat lacking early tutorials give Frostpunk a somewhat high barrier of entry. Do not go in thinking you will be successful right off of the bat. This is a challenging game with some uneven difficulty spikes that can feel punishing and even unfair at times, but the capability to rebound is almost always there, so long as you respond quickly and decisively. Frostpunk will not be for everyone, but fans of survival or city-building games really owe it to themselves to give this one a try now that it has made its way from PC to console.

Frostpunk: Console Edition is a brutal game where every choice comes at a price.

Frostpunk skillfully combines survival with city building and adds unique winter setting and tense atmosphere to the mix. There's not much replay value, though.

Frostpunk is not for the faint of heart. However, if you think you can handle the stressful job of being a leader, you can easily lose a couple of nights to the game.

Frostpunk is simply breath-taking. The game can keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat for hours. Unfortunately, this is why the game falls short.

If doom and gloom isn't your thing then Frostpunk won't appeal and you're better off with a less misery-drenched city-builder such as the excellent Cities: Skylines. But if you're a sucker for the punishing post-apocalyptic (and this game can certainly dish it out) then Frostpunk's bleak winter wonderland will keep you hooked, turning you into a horrible, horrible person in the process.

Frostpunk isn't perfect, but it doesn't really matter, as this is playing a different kind of ball game that has a unique charm of its own. It engrosses players into its frozen, post-apocalyptic world, and lets them do more than just design a city; it lets them really fear about failing, and it lets them feel immense joy for every small victory. It's a survival strategy game at its best.

Frostpunk on consoles is as good as the PC version, and this definitely is a great news for everyone who loves strategy and survival games. Just don't expect it to be a regular city builder.
